Kentucky at Florida

For all of the SEC! SEC! SEC! chants out there being pushed on the SEC Network and ESPN these schools really don’t like each other much.

SEC officials are probably the worst in the entire country and they let way too much go on. In this Kentucky/Florida game there were at least 2 really nasty late hits that were in plain sight and in front of at least one official and both could have led to serious injury. It’s just uncalled for and if the damn refs would throw a flag. then the head coaches of these schools are going to start benching players for it and maybe put an end to it.

Florida’s Running Back, Kelvin Taylor, had slipped on the ground and was laying there for at least 2 seconds when Kentucky’s Defensive Tackle Melvin Lewis, a JC transfer from Compton, California, came charging in leading with his head and just speared Taylor with total intent of injury. No flag. Taylor was slightly injured on the play. Melvin Lewis is 6-4, 320. A 320 pound man spearing you with his helmet has to hurt.

Another incident happened on a punt return by Kentucky and the return man, Demarco Robinson was sitting on the ground and the Florida coverage guy went for his head, obviously late.

I love the SEC. I love football. I love hard hitting and I love tough defenses. But, cheap shots on defenseless players should not be allowed and the SEC officials just look at the fouls and just let them happen time after time.

Kentucky came into this game at 2-0 and had looked really good. Head coach Mark Stoops has had the two best recruiting classes in the history of Kentucky the last two years and it’s starting to show up on the playing field already.

Their offense is stacked with young talent at pretty much every position. Quarterback Patrick Towles is a sophomore that was not recruited by Stoops but he is a talent. At 6-5, 238 with a great arm and very good speed for a big man, Towles is one to watch in the future.

Most of his top receivers are true freshmen. His Offensive Line is mostly young as well with the starters at guard being redshirt freshmen.

The Wildcats have looked good so far but they have not played quality opponents until they played Florida.

The Gators are coming off their worst season in decades. Finishing 4-8 in 2013 left a bad taste in everybody’s mouth.

They lost quarterback Jeff Driskel for the year early in the season and it was a struggle from that point on. Driskel is back and they have the usual stout defense.

Their first game was postponed by the weather, then they blew out  Eastern Michigan in what should have been their second game, 65-0.

As should have been expected, this game was a defensive slug fest in the first half especially. The half ended at 3-3 with neither team able to get much going against really stout defenses.

The third quarter was a shootout in comparison with Florida scoring 17 points and Kentucky 14 points of their own.

It was back to defensive battle in the fourth quarter with the Wildcats kicking a Field Goal to tie up the game at 20 all.

Three Overtimes later, the Gators walked away with a hard fought 36-30 win.

Florida Quarterback Jeff Driskel hit 25 out of 43 passes for 295 yards and 3 Touchdowns.

235 pound junior Running Back Matt Jones had 156 yards rushing on 29 carries and 1 Touchdown. Gator Wide Receiver may be the offensive player of the week with an outstanding 15 catch night for 216 yards and 2 Touchdowns. One of his Touchdown receptions tied the game in the first Overtime. The Gators take on Alabama this coming week and it will fun to watch and see if they can repeat something similar against the Tide.

Patrick Towles for Kentucky was pretty good in a losing effort other than the 3 interceptions he threw. Towles hit 24 passes out of 45 attempts for 369 yards and 3 Touchdowns. The Wildcats only rushed for 81 yards, but they did light up the Gators secondary.

True freshman Garrett Johnson had a really good night catching 6 passes for 154 yards and 2 long Touchdowns.

This game was fun to watch and really intense from the first Kick Off. The triple Overtime made it even more fun. If you missed this game the first time, it’s worth a watch on the SEC Network if you have it.
