2019 Heisman Candidates

Last year’s Heisman favorites faded really fast as in the first couple of games and nobody at all suspected Kyler Murray of Oklahoma would have won. Nor, would anyone have suspected that a Sooner would win it two years in a row, but one did.

Here’s my early look at next year’s Heisman favorites.

1. Trevor Lawrence – Clemson QB: Lawrence is just a talent from another world. Sure, he didn’t have the big numbers that some quarterbacks put up, but his numbers were good. Sure, he also had really great receivers and great running backs and a really almost great offensive line. But, there’s no denying the talent of Trevor Lawrence. I blogged about him when he was a high school senior, he was that good. Then, he proved it on the field, replacing a solid senior who soon transferred elsewhere. Lawrence threw for over 3,200 yards and 30 touchdowns with only 4 interceptions as a true freshman leading his team to a national championship. Those numbers may not be the best out there, but he didn’t start until the 5th game and he missed most of that game after getting banged up. Whether Lawrence has a sophomore slump this next season, or continues to shine, he should be the very top pick in the NFL draft in the season he comes out.

2. Tua Tagovailoa – Alabama QB: The second place finisher in 2018, and he should be one of the

top guys again in 2019. Like Lawrence, he has a lot of serious targets and the Tide will have a great running game again to open things up. Tagovailoa has the arm and he has the feet to led the Crimson Tide to yet another championship in 2019 and he has an outstanding chance of winning the Heisman before leaving for the NFL. He is just a talent. Last season, he threw for just under 4,000 yards and 43 touchdowns. His rushing totals were a bit disappointing, or he may have beaten out Kyler Murray, but he also dealt with injuries.

With guys like Jerry Jeudy returning at wide receiver, look for Tua to have another great year and be a real challenge to win the Heisman. After he declares for the NFL, the Tide has another Tagovailoa coming into the program this season.

3. Jonathan Taylor – Wisconsin RB: I have to forgive the Badgers for making me look bad last season when I predicted they would earn a playoff spot. With 5 returning offensive linemen and 3 of them projected as 1st round picks, I figured the Badgers would be difficult to beat. But, they proved me wrong early and often finishing 8-5. But, Jonathan Taylor was as good as expected, maybe even better. On the season, the junior to be ran for 2,194 yards and 16 touchdowns. He was not used much as a receiver out of the backfield because the Wisconsin quarterbacking situation was incredibly awful, but he still caught 8 passes. This guy is a speedster having won the New Jersey 100 meters state championship in high school and at 5-11, 220 which is pretty awesome. Taylor placed in the top 10 last season, but he would have been higher in the voting if his team had been as good as

expected.

4. Travis Etienne – Clemson RB: I probably have Etienne a little too high on the list, but he’s really good. Last season, as a sophomore, the 200 pounder from Jennings, Louisiana ran for an impressive 1,658 yards and 24 touchdowns averaging over 8 yards per carry. He had an additional 2 touchdowns receiving and that was when sharing the backfield with Adam Choice, Lynn J Dixon and Terrance Rencher who rushed for over 1,500 yards on their own. Etienne is plenty fast if he breaks free of the line of scrimmage, he is likely to take it the distance which is why he averaged over 8 yards per carry. But, also, the Clemson Tiger’s talent at quarterback and at wide receiver allows him some room in the middle. If Clemson didn’t split their carries to keep their backs fresh, Etienne would have climbed over the 2,000 yard mark, possibly.

Justin Herbert – Oregon QB: Herbert shocked most pundits by deciding to return to Oregon for his senior season. He probably would have been the first quarterback picked if he had declared for the NFL. Herbert is the prototypical NFL quarterback at 6-6, 235 with a great arm and great mobility. He’s an awesome prospect. As a junior, he threw for just over 3,100 yards and 29 touchdowns against only 8 interceptions. He only ran for 166 yards and 2 touchdowns, but sacks took away from his total and he is more of a drop back passer than a duel threat, anyway. Herbert could go as high as third in next year’s voting, or who knows, he could win it all. He has all the skills to win the trophy, and be a top NFL pick.

6. Sam Ehlinger – Texas QB: Here’s a guy that really came on as a sophomore and many compared to Tim Tebow. He’s a strong runner, like Tebow, but a much better passer. Ehlinger is similar in size to Tebow at 6-3, 235 and he’s money inside the red zone as a runner. He threw for just a few yards under 3,300 yards and 25 touchdowns with only 5 picks. Ehlinger also ran for 482 yards and 16 touchdowns. Ehlinger really came on as a sophomore after a disappointing start versus Maryland in game one in leading the Longhorns to a 10-4 record and promising Texas fans a bright future.

7. Jake Fromm – Georgia QB: Fromm took a lot of heat from fans, but still held off a challenge from true freshman super star Justin Fields. The 6-2, 220 junior to be threw for 2,749 yards and 30 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2018. The Bulldogs finished a somewhat disappointing 11-3 after challenging for a playoff spot most of the season. Fields will be back and the Dogs have recruited

lights out for the past few years which should put them in a position to challenge again.

8. Jerry Jeudy – Alabama WR: The returning Fred Biletnikoff Award winner, Jeudy, is one of the very best players in the land. After not catching that many passes as a true freshman, Jeudy stepped up in 2018 and hauled in 68 receptions for 1,315 yards averaging over 19 yards per catch. A wide receiver hasn’t won a Heisman Trophy since Desmond Howard of Michigan way back in 1991, and a defensive back won one since that date. It’s not likely to happen, but Jeudy is a super star.

9. Justyn Ross and Tee Higgins – Clemson WR: Another really outstanding wide receiver this past season was true freshman Justyn Ross of Clemson. If not Justyn Ross, another Clemson wide out, Tee Higgins could easily fit in right here. Both are super stars with great size, speed and leaping ability. Ross made so many circus catches and impressive plays the he just belongs on this list, and so did Higgins. The Clemson Tigers scored a major recruiting coop by stealing Ross from right under the noses of Alabama and Auburn because he’s from Phenix City, Alabama and he was the top recruit in that state last year. They did the same the previous recruiting class by taking Higgins out of the state of Tennessee. Look for bigger things out of both Ross and Tee Higgins next season and Higgins going in the first round after he declares.

10. D’Andre Swift – Georgia RB: The Bulldog’s Swift lives up to his name with his quickness. But, at 5-9, 215, he is also burly and strong. In 2018, Swift and Elijah Holyfield split carries and both topped 1,000 yards rushing, with Swift also catching 32 passes for 297 yards. Holyfield took off for the NFL and Swift is back for his true junior season. Georgia likes to split their carries around, so look for James Cook and redshirt freshman Zamir White to get plenty of carries also, if White is healed from his knee injury. But, no matter what, expect Swift to rush for around 1,500 yards as Georgia really loves to run the ball.

11. McKenzie Milton – UCF QB: If Milton recovers from his nasty injury, he could be a difference maker again. However, with the loss of head coach Scott Frost, his numbers had dropped significantly even before his injury. He has very little chance at even placing in the top 10, but if healthy, this kid is magic. He was heading toward a 3,200 yard season, or maybe better, after throwing for over 4,000 yards the previous season,
