Playoff Update November 6, 2017: It’s a Mess

1. Alabama: The Tide is still the king of the SEC no matter what anyone says. We’ve all seen this before with the playoff committee and the media trying to write off Nick Saban and Alabama. Everyone but Bama fans are tired of them being at the top, but writing them off doesn’t make them any less than they truly are. Alabama is still the top team in the country even if they didn’t play well against LSU.

2. Georgia: Two SEC teams in the playoffs is inevitable now. The playoff committee has the Georgia Bulldogs rated higher than Alabama. Only a loss against Auburn and another against Alabama could keep Georgia out of the playoffs. Jake Fromm is a very good freshman quarterback, but will he be able to throw well against great defenses like Alabama? We’ll find out soon enough. Georgia has the 4th best defense in the country over all right now and that could make things interesting.

3. Clemson: The Tiger defense looked awful at times against North Carolina State, but they did enough to win. Their heralded defensive line was mostly manhandled by the Wolfpack offensive line. But, the Clemson Tigers did everything they needed to do to beat the Wolfpack and people do forget that they should have lost to North Carolina State last season.

4. Notre Dame: Winning out is a must, obviously, but their only loss was to unbeaten Georgia and by one point. Notre Dame has been winning big lately, but Wake Forest scored a lot of points on the

Irish defense which is concerning. This weekend, the Fighting Irish have a road trip to undefeated Miami. This will be a tough test for Notre Dame.

5. Wisconsin: Sure, they haven’t been tested by any real tough competition, but they are the only unbeaten team left in the Big 10. The Big 10 was destroyed this past weekend with the Ohio State loss at Iowa and the Penn State loss at Michigan State. The Badgers’ only shot is winning out, including the B1G championship. As usual, the Badgers have a top defense, maybe even better than usual.

6. Oklahoma: Baker Mayfield probably won the Heisman Trophy with his numbers against Oklahoma State in their Bedlam game. But, their defense was horrendous with the Cowboys scoring 52 points in a wild 62-52 game. The Sooners have one loss on their record and they have TCU and the Big 12 Championship game remaining. It’s highly unlikely at this time that the Sooners earn a playoff berth, and the lack of defense is more than concerning.

7. Miami: The Canes are one of the few undefeated teams left in college football. Their win over a good Virginia Tech squad was almost surprising, but very impressive. Now, they have Notre Dame coming to town and a win over the Fighting Irish may be enough to put Miami in the playoff talk.

8. TCU: The Horn Frogs have Oklahoma next and this will be an elimination game for both teams. The Frogs play better defense, but they have a loss to Iowa State. Against Oklahoma, it will be great offense against great defense with winner possibly taking it all.

9. Washington: The Huskies still have an outside shot at a playoff berth, but there’s not a lot of talk about them this season and they have a couple of tough games waiting in Stanford and Washington State. Even though they probably win the Pac 12, there’s not a lot of respect for their conference right now. The Huskies have the top defense in the entire country presently which should place them in the picture.

10. UCF: The Central Florida Knights were 0-12 two seasons ago and Scott Frost came in and turned the program completely around in 2 seasons. Every program in the country that wants to fire their

coach, or who already has, is talking about Scott Frost. The Knights are sitting at 8-0 and they have a shot at finishing the season unbeaten.

I hope we don’t get in the position of allowing teams with 2 losses in the playoffs and this is just how I see it.
