Alabama 2014 Spring Game

Jacob Coker has not graduated from Florida State yet, so he is not on campus. As of now, Blake Sims is the starter at QB for Alabama. Sims did not have a good game at all and I am sure Bama fans are concerned.

But, one thing else to consider is that he was playing against the Alabama defense. Near the end of the game, Sims finally hooked up on a nice pass with Chris Black for a TD. Hopefully, that will build his confidence up for the Fall.

Super recruit and early enrollee Cam Robinson from Monroe, Louisiana started at Left Tackle and gave up a sack right away with Xzavier Dickson blowing right past him. But, Robinson did get better and he has a really good chance to be a super talent.

Arie Kouandjio was at LG, Ryan Kelly was back at Center, Leon Brown was at Right Guard and Austin Shepherd was at tackle. This Offensive Line should be pretty good, maybe one of the better lines in the country.

Excellent blocker, Brian Vogler started at one Tight End position and excellent receiver, O.J. Howard started at the other Tight End spot. Super Wide Receiver Amari Cooper was at one wide out spot and Christian Jones at the other with the amazing TJ Yeldon at Running Back.

If the Tide can get the right QB in place, this can be a top offense.

Defense played well in this scrimmage.

JC transfer Jarran Reed and returning starter A’Shawn Robinson were at the defensive end positions. Brandon Ivory was at the Nose. Previously mentioned Zxavier Dickson was at one OLB spot and Denzel Devall at the other. Inside backers were Reggie Ragland and Trey DePriest. Bradley Sylve and Cyrus Jones were the Corners but true freshman and early enrollee Tony Brown looked tremendous with the second team. He may start before the year is over.

Jarrick Williams and Landon Collins lined up at the safeties.

This is a sensational defense on paper, but they struggle against spread teams.

While the defense did dominate most of the scrimmage, Cooper Bateman did have his moments as a back up QB. He was inconsistent but he did make a few good throws and he can move a little bit. I think the job is Coker’s to lose.

Both TJ Yeldon and back up Running Back Kenyan Drake had some really nice runs. Derrick Henry was kept bottled up all day and had no running room whatsoever. That doesn’t make him any less talented.

Alabama wound up playing 5 QBs and none of them were very impressive. Sims was probably the least impressive of them all other than maybe David Cornwell. Cornwell is just loaded with potential and has a chance at being a star, but he had no chance in this game. Alec Morris, a sophomore from Allen, Texas had a nice scramble and did some good things in this scrimmage. But, he also did some bad things in this scrimmage.

Parker McLeod also played at QB and his first pass was picked off by Xzavier Dickson. Not a good day to be a QB in Tuscaloosa. Lane Kiffin has his work cut out for him, but his group of QBs does have some athletic ability.

Back up defenders Tony Brown at CB and Dillon Lee and Walker Jones looked good at the LB spots.

Spring Games are really just to generate fan interest and don’t mean all that much. Bama defense did look really good and the top 2 RBs looked really good.,

There’s really no reason to worry if you are a Bama fan.
