Players of the Week November 22nd

Samaje Perine – Oklahoma. Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon set the national rushing in a single game record last week against Nebraska rushing for 408 yards. The record lasted all of one whole week.

Some day, people reading this blog will start to listen to me about this stuff, but I said in my team analysis of Oklahoma last Spring that Samaje Perine would be better than the other true freshman Running Back and higher rated Joe Mixon from California. Mixon got in trouble pretty quickly in Norman, but Perine has been an instant force.

On Saturday,  Samaje Perine ran into the record books and into the history books as well. Gordon broke LaDainian Tomlinson’s record from 1999 just one week prior. Perine, the true freshman from Pflugerville, Texas ran for a simply incredible 427 yards on 34 carries and 5 Touchdowns. Perine is a pure power back standing at 5-10, 245. He’s not going to win any footraces but he’s obviously fast enough to ramble for over 400 yards in a single game. Breaking the 400 mark in back to back weeks by Gordon and then Perine is obviously something never before done in college football and we were all around to witness it. The Oklahoma Sooners shouldn’t be surprised by the success of a true freshman Running Back. They had incredible Marcus Dupree way back in 1982 that set the world on fire before flaking out and leaving during his sophomore season. Then, there was Adrian Peterson in 2004 that helped Oklahoma make it to the National Championship game. Perine is up to 1,428 yards and 19 Touchdowns so far in his freshman season.

Tyler Lockett Wide Receiver and Jake Waters Quarterback Kansas State. Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder is without a doubt the best coach in this era. He hasn’t won any national championships and probably won’t, but what he does every season with the Kansas State Wildcats. There’s a reason why the football stadium is named Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Kansas State was once the worst college football program in the land and that was year after year stretching for

decades. One of the reasons for their poor football program for decades is that there is little football talent in the state of Kansas.

The state of Kansas does have, however, a very good Junior College system that a lot of high school talent attend to further their football playing careers. Whether it’s from bad grades, or injuries, or the kid is a late bloomer, a lot of good to great talent comes through a Junior College in either Kansas, California or Mississippi. Bill Snyder built a formidable program with Junior College players and the best high school players he could sign. Some of the best high school talent he has signed has been a few members of the Lockett family from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Tyler Lockett is the son of a former Kansas State All American player and the nephew of yet another. Last season, Lockett had 81 catches and he has 70 so far this season.

On Thursday night, the Kansas State Wildcats played West Virginia on the road. Morgantown is a tough place to play for just about anybody.

Kansas State gave the hometown Mountaineers a taste of their own medicine with Lockett having 10 receptions for 196 yards. He didn’t have any Touchdown catches, but Lockett is also an outstanding punt return man. He had 2 punt returns for 66 yards and 1 for a 43 yard Touchdown giving the Wildcats a 17-3 lead which the Mountaineers would never recover from.

Lockett’s Quarterback, Jake Waters, is one of those Junior College transfers that have fed the Wildcat program for so many years. Waters came in last season as the top rated Junior College Quarterback in the nation. He had his fair share of struggles early on last season, but came on late in the season and he is having a great season in 2014. Waters is 6-1, 210, which means he won’t be popular with NFL scouts, but he has a decent arm and can make plays with his feet.

Waters has run for over 300 yards this year. Through 10 games, Waters has thrown for 2,569 yards in 2014.

On Thursday night, Waters had his best game as a Wildcat as far as throwing the ball. He had 22 completions out of 34 passing attempts which was good for 400 yards and a Touchdown.

Waters and Tyler Lockett led their Kansas State Wildcats to a 26-20 victory over the West Virginia Mountaineers improving their season record to 8-2 on the season.

Jalin Marshall – Ohio State Wide Receiver. I don’t remember another college football season with as many talented freshmen as this season. The game is changing due to so many players leaving early for the NFL so it’s getting more important to efficiently use freshmen. The Buckeyes Quarterback is a redshirt freshman as is talented Wide Receiver Jalin Marshall. Marshall was considered by some experts as the top prospect in Ohio as a senior in the 2012 season and he played Quarterback at

Middletown, Ohio.

Marshall had an impressive day on Saturday. He only had 5 receptions for 95 yards, but 3 of those catches went for a Touchdown. Like several other talented Wide Receivers, Marshall is also a talented return man. The Buckeyes only have him returning punts, but he did his job on Saturday returning 2 and 1 of them went for another Touchdown.

The Buckeyes won 42- 27, but they may not have without Marshall and his scoring.

Tevin Coleman – Indiana Running Back.  Across the field from spectacular freshmen Barrett and Marshall on Saturday was Indiana’s Tevin Coleman.

Other rare side wholesale viagra 100mg effects include anxiety and priapism, an erection long enough for intercourse to take place, and premature ejaculation. Tevin Coleman has quietly gone about his Junior season and put up some huge numbers. What’s amazing about Coleman is that the Hoosiers barely have anything else on offense and little to no passing game at all. Melvin Gordon at Wisconsin leads the nation and the Big 10 in rushing in 2014 with 2109 yards rushing, but Coleman is set to go over 2000 on the season as well and has 1,906 yards rushing presently with 15 Touchdowns. SEC fans may snicker here saying these guys don’t play anybody but Indiana beat SEC East leading Missouri when really nobody in the SEC can get it done.

Against the Buckeyes Saturday, which is a good defense, Coleman ran for 228 yards on 27 carries and 3 Touchdowns. Coleman averaged 8.4 yards per carry against a top 20 defense, which is a major accomplishment.

Indiana is only 3-8 on the season and they have traditional in-state rival Purdue remaining on their schedule. Coleman should be able to break the 2000 yard barrier next Saturday. Then, expect Junior Coleman to declare for the NFL draft. Coleman has over 3,000 career rushing yards at Indiana and with the talent level of his team one could hardly blame him for leaving for the money.

Rohan Gaines – Arkansas Defensive Back and the Arkansas Razorback defense. My advice to the Missouri Tigers for next Friday’s game against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Buckle on your chin straps really, really tight. These guys can play.

Honestly, I know the Razorbacks are only 6-5 on the season, but right now they can play with just about anybody in the country. Don’t believe me? Ask Alabama or Mississippi State, or better yet ask LSU or Ole Miss.

The Razorbacks were 3-9 last season. This season, they started off 0-1, then they won 3 straight. Then, they lost to the Aggies in Overtime which was crushing, but it showed their potential. They lost to Alabama 14-13 and everyone was all over the Crimson Tide about how bad they looked. Arkansas gave up a lot of first half yardage and points against Georgia, but the second half of that game may have been the season changer for the Hogs. They lost, but they looked much, much better.

They beat a cream puff and then lost 17-10 to number 1 ranked Mississippi State in Starkville. The following week, the Hogs completely dominated LSU and won 17-0. This past weekend, the Razorbacks rose again and completely dominated a very good Ole Miss squad winning 30-0. Two weeks in a row the Arkansas Razorbacks have shut out their opponents, so this defense deserves some mention as players of the week.

The reason that Rohan Gaines gets mention is because Ole Miss was driving with the football and desperately trying to get back in this game. Bo Wallace put up a pass to a wide open Wide Receiver and Gaines read the play and picked off the pass. With a convoy of his fellow defenders, Rohan Gaines took the ball from his own End Zone more than 100 yards to put a nail in the coffin of the Rebels game and practically their entire season.

Rohan Gaines is the 5th leading tackler on this team which is led by leading tackler Linebacker Martrell Spaight. Alabama native Defensive End Trey Flowers is probably the most talented and best player on this defense, but this defense is scary good right now.

Win or lose against Missouri in their last game, they are now bowl eligible and I will feel sorry for their unfortunate opponent in a bowl game with a similar 6 or 7 win season. Arkansas is, without a doubt, the best 6-5 team in the country right now. Bret Bielema is taking what he did at Wisconsin and bringing it South where he can get more athletic players way more easily and he should dominate for years in the SEC once he gets this program moving steadily ahead.

Nick Wilson- Arizona Running Back. 2014 is the year of the freshman. Nick Wilson is a true freshman and a very talented 5-10, 200 Running Back from Fresno, California. Many think that Oregon true freshman Royce Freeman is the best newcomer in the Pac 12 conference and he very well may be. Freeman is a 6-0, 230 freshman out of Imperial, California and he is going to be a great one and really he already is.

But, Nick Wilson has more rushing yardage for Arizona than Freeman by a slight margin and Wilson missed a game plus was slowed by an injury during the midpoint of the season.

Wilson is a speed guy and sealed the win against Utah with a 75 yard Touchdown run and then another for 19 yards. The experts picked Utah to win this game because their defense was much too physical for the Arizona Wildcats, but the Wildcats once again proved the experts wrong by simply dominating the Utes.

Wilson ran wild on 20 carries gaining 218 yards and scoring 3 Touchdowns in leading the surprising Arizona Wildcats to a convincing 42-10 win over the Utes.

The future looks bright for the Arizona Wildcats with a redshirt freshman Quarterback in Anu Solomon and true freshman Running Back Nick Wilson and plenty of other youth on their offense and defense.

Vince Mayle – Washington State Wide Receiver. Vince Mayle is a big time player for the Washington State Cougars. Mayle is a 6-3, 220 Senior with good speed out of Sacramento, California. He has the size, speed and the hands to make some NFL team a quality Wide Receiver. On Saturday, his Quarterback threw for over 600 yards which Mayle accounting for 252 of those yards on 15 receptions.

Mayle is up to 101 receptions on the season and 1,404 yards plus 9 Touchdowns.

Vince Mayle played Running Back and Linebacker in high school and then played football and basketball at Shasta Community College. He was 6-3, 240 last season as a Wide Receiver but dropped around 20 pounds hopefully to improve his quickness. It must have worked because he is having a phenomenal season. The Pac 12 is loaded at the Wide Receiver position.
