NFL Fans Need to Remember the Name Vince Mayle

When Vince Mayle was growing up in Natomus, California he dreamed of playing basketball in the NBA. What he didn’t dream about at Inderkum High School, located on the edge of California state capital Sacramento, was doing his school work.

Mayle signed with Shasta Community College in Redding out of high school to play basketball. He averaged 8 points a game and won a slam dunk contest in junior college.

But, he dropped out when his mom was injured in a car wreck to take care of her.

Vince Mayle was out of school for a year and worked several part time jobs. While he was out of school he started thinking about his future and he didn’t want to be ‘that guy’ walking around the streets that could have done it but he didn’t.

In 2012, he was back in school. This time, it was at Sierra College which is in Rocklin, California and near his home.

But, this time, he was focused on football for the first time in his life. Vince Mayle was 6-3, 240 and chiseled, plus he ran a 4.5 40. The question about a guy that big with that kind of speed becomes where do you play him.  He had the speed for Wide Receiver, but the size of a Tight End. On defense, he was maybe Defensive End size or maybe Linebacker and had the speed to play just about anywhere. They played him at Wide Receiver.

At Sierra College, Mayle led all Junior College Receivers with 16 Touchdowns.

Some of the big boys noticed and he was recruited by Ohio State, Miami, Arizona State, Kentucky, West Virginia and probably a few more.

He chose to play for Mike Leach at Washington State.

Washington State with Mike Leach and his passing offense was the right choice for Vince Mayle.  As a junior in 2013, Mayle had 42 receptions for 539 yards and 7 Touchdowns. It was easy to tell he was a work in progress and he still is now, but he has come a long way considering he has only really been playing football a couple of years.

This past off season he worked extremely hard and dropped 20 pounds preparing for his senior season which shows drive and a great work ethic.

Vince Mayle’s senior season was impressive with him bringing in 106 receptions for 1,483 yards and 9 touchdowns. Since the season ended he has accepted an invitation to play in the both the Senior Bowl and the East West Shrine game.

Right now, he is projected as a 2nd to 3rd rounder but he could move up with a great performance in this games, plus testing well at the combine.

Supposedly, the top big Wide Receiver to be taken will be DeVante Parker out of Louisville, according to all of the experts.

Parker had a much better season as a junior in 2013 with Tedy Bridgewater throwing him passes and Charlie Strong as his head coach. His production dropped dramatically in 2014 which could possibly open the door for Vince Mayle to be picked higher. Again, that depends on how things go in the All Star game showings and his test results at the combine.

Besides DeVante Parker at Louisville, there is Jaelen Strong at Arizona State. Then, there is Kevin White at West Virginia and Cam Worthy at East Carolina.

These are all big Wide Receivers at about 6-3 and 215 and up. The big Wide Receivers are getting more and more popular with NFL scouts and these guys will be in high demand.

Joining these guys will be Michigan junior Devin Funchess who is the biggest of them all at 6-5, 230 and supposedly he runs in the 4.4 range.

For all of these guys, the NFL combine is going to be all the more important to establish themselves as a top Wide Receiver prospect. I think when the smoke clears that Vince Mayle will be standing there with the best of them.
