The Bermuda Triangle vs the Freshmen Linebackers

In the early 1980s, under the guidance of head coach Howard Schnellenberger, the Miami Hurricanes became a regular member in the top 25 and usually in the top 10.

There were many, many great players and All Americans with guys like Vinny Testaverde, Michael Irvin, Jerome Brown, Bennie and Brian Blades, Ray Lewis, Steve Walsh, Daniel Stubbs and so many, many more.

The Hurricanes were always a force to be reckoned with almost every season and they won 5 National Titles between 1983 and 2001. Maybe the peak of the program was reached from the years 1987 and 1991.

A part of that time period, they had a trio of Linebackers that became known as the Bermuda Triangle. You can read more about the Bermuda Triangle here: LBs

The Bermuda Triangle consisted of 3 longtime starters at Linebacker for the Hurricanes, Michael

Barrow, Darrin Smith and Jessie Armstead.

These 3 Linebackers were a major part of the 1991 championship team. They were big, fast, strong and they would each hit like a truck.

Mark Richt and his coaching staff finished what the previous coaching staff started and signed the 2016 recruiting class.

The Hurricanes signed Shaquille Quarterman, the 3rd rated Inside Linebacker in the 2016 class from Orange Park, Florida. They also signed Zachery McCloud who was the 11th rated Outside Linebacker and from Lantana, Florida. Plus, Michael Pinckney from Jacksonville, Florida. Quarterman and McCloud were 4 stars, but McCloud was a 3 star.

All three of them are starters on the 2016 Miami defense and a part of the current Miami resurgence.

Pinckney and Quarterman are among the Canes top four leading tacklers and McCloud is way back but he is pulled from the game in passing situations.

The Hurricanes won their first 4 games this season before losing on a blocked extra point against chief rival Florida State.

They have games coming up with North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, and North Carolina State and it remains to be seen whether the Canes are back. They do look improved and they have a lot of youthful talent. But, the remaining schedule is difficult especially Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The Hokies are much better than a year ago.

But, so are the Hurricanes. They are in the top 10 national in total defense and the freshmen Linebackers are making a difference.

While the freshmen Linebackers may be making a big difference it remains to be seen how they

match up with the Bermuda Triangle group of years ago. All three of the Bermuda Triangle in Barrow, Smith and Armstead played in the NFL. Probably Barrow was the best college football player of the group, but Armstead was the best in the NFL.

This group of Quarterman, Pinckney and McCloud are just 18 or 19 year old freshmen and a lot can still happen, both good or bad.

The freshmen are halfway through with their first seasons as college football players. They are obviously not on the same level as those guys from about 25 years ago. But, could they be before their time is up in Miami? Keep watching.
