I don’t deny being a big fan of Stanford, David Shaw and Christian McCaffrey. But, what is Stanford going to look like next year without super star Running Back McCaffrey?
Luckily, Stanford still has a talented Running Back in school and he’s a very talented one in Bryce Love. David Shaw generally likes a bigger Running Back. McCaffrey wasn’t a big back at around 200, or 205 pounds, but before McCaffrey came along, Stanford had Tyler Gaffney who played at around 225 pounds. With Jim Harbaugh still around, the Cardinal used Toby Gerhart who weighed in at a solid 235 pounds.
Bryce Love is supposedly 185 pounds, but he is a blur.
In 2015, McCaffrey was having the season of a life time, and the Cardinal had Remound Wright and
Barry Sanders Jr as his back up. True freshman Bryce Love was the 4th Running Back off the bench, but he showed so much speed. Love is 5-10, 185 from Wake Forest, North Carolina with speed to burn.
As a true freshman, Love only got 29 carries, but he took them for 226 yards which is 7.79 yards per carry. He also caught 15 passes which he took for 250 yards and a Touchdown.
McCaffrey had to miss a game against Notre Dame during the 2016 season and Bryce Love got his first start of his career. He took advantage of that to run for 129 yards on 23 carries.
McCaffrey still ran for 1,603 yards and 13 Touchdowns while missing the Notre Dame game and electing not to play in the Sun Bowl against North Carolina. Love got his second start in the Sun Bowl and responded with 119 rushing yards.
As a sophomore, Bryce Love ran for 783 yards and 2 Touchdowns.
This season without McCaffrey, Bryce Love becomes the man.
His back up should be junior Cameron Scarlett who is more like a David Shaw type of back at 6-1, 220. Scarlett carried the ball 38 times as a sophomore for 117 yards and a Touchdown.
Other Running Backs available this Spring are Trevor Speights and Dorian Maddox, but neither has any experience.

Running Back should be fine. Who knows what Bryce Love is capable of as an every day starter, but
he did produce last season in two starts.
The bigger problem for the Cardinal offense could still be at Quarterback. They need some stability.
Last year, the Cardinal played two Quarterbacks in Ryan Burns and Keller Chryst. Burns started the early games, but he was benched after throwing 3 Interceptions against Colorado and replaced by Chryst. Burns threw 5 Touchdown passes against 7 Interceptions. While Chryst was slightly better and threw 10 Touchdowns with only 2 picks.
There’s also former super recruit KJ Costello who came in and redshirted last season. Not only that, the Cardinal signed one of the top Quarterback recruits in the nation out of the Atlanta, Georgia area. Greater Atlanta Christian School in Norcross produced the nations’ 2nd ranked drop back passer in Davis Mills. The 6-4, 200 Mills has a really good arm and will battle with Costello for maybe the next big thing at Quarterback for Stanford.
Wide Receivers Trenton Irwin and JJ Arcega-Whiteside return as does Tight End Dalton Schultz.
They have a solid nucleus returning in the Offensive Line led by Center Jesse Burkett, Tackles Casey Tucker, A.T. Hall and David Bright, plus Guards Brandon Fanaika and Nate Herbig. This is a solid
group even before 5 star recruits Foster Sarell and Walker Little arrive in the summer.
Defensively, the Cardinal lost their top Defensive Lineman in Solomon Thomas. But, they return so many other guys that this should again be a team strength.
2017 should show us if the Washington Huskies were a fluke in 2016 as they replaced Oregon as the other power in the North. The one thing we should know for sure is that the Stanford Cardinal will be among the leaders in the Pac 12, even without Christian McCaffrey.
