Summer Time Heisman Favorites 2018

1. Bryce Love – Stanford: Love just has to be the favorite going into the season. He is the most explosive player in the country and can take it the distance at almost any time. Taking over for Christian McCaffrey last season, Love ran for an incredible 2,118 yards and 19 touchdowns. The country knows they messed up with McCaffrey and will pay more attention with Love. Another advantage for Love will be the return of most of the starters in the offensive line including young super star Walker Little. Stanford probably got ripped with McCaffrey and possibly Andrew Luck and Tony Gerhart. Maybe Love will wind up on top.

2. Jonathan Taylor – Wisconsin: True freshman Taylor was quite the sensation last year and this year he will have an experienced offensive line with everyone returning. Taylor seems to have it all, good size, speed and change of directions. He won the New Jersey state championship in the 100 meters, so you know he can run. He is also that typical Wisconsin type of back in that he’s around 5-11, 215 and maybe will be bigger this year as he goes through a year of weight training. Taylor ran for an amazing 1,977 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was not called upon to be a receiver much out of the backfield but caught 8 passes for 95 yards. Jonathan Taylor is one of the really good running

backs that have been coming along lately such as Leonard Fournette and Saquon Barkley.

3. Tua Tagovailoa – Alabama: Despite being on the sidelines most of last year, Tagovailoa came in at halftime last year and led the Crimson Tide from behind to win the national championship. Tagovailoa is about 6-1, 220 with a rocket launcher attached to his shoulder and the legs and body of a running back. He can put the long ball right on the money and he can take off running and get a touchdown He didn’t start as a freshman and comes into his sophomore season as one of the favorites to win the Heisman based almost solely on what he did in the national championship game. He is a long shot right now and will he start over Jalen Hurts who threw 17 touchdown passes last season as the starter of every game and only 1 interception. Time will tell, but Tua Tagovailoa has as much potential as anyone out there.

4. Khalil Tate – Arizona: Tate came out of nowhere to take over the quarterbacking job at Arizona and he was fantastic. Mostly a runner at this point, with 1,411 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in his first year as a starter. Tate also has a strong arm, but only threw for 1,591 yards and 14 touchdowns last year. But, what’s working in his favor as far as I am concerned, is the arrival of head coach Kevin Sumlin. At Houston and at Texas A%M, Sumlin has shown what he can do with a talented quarterback as in Case Keenum and Johnny Manziel. At 6-2, 215, Tate is bigger than either of them and has more speed than Manziel. He can run and he can throw himself into the Heisman picture pretty quickly if things go as planned. Remember, Manziel won the Heisman Trophy in Kevin Sumlin’s first season in College Station. Arizona may be the perfect situation for Sumlin and Khalil Tate.

5. Jake Fromm – Georgia: Another true freshman last year that was really tough down the stretch. Fromm is going to have to keep his job, first, because the Bulldogs signed one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the country in Justin Fields. However, Fromm should not be overlooked at all. From the moment I first saw Fromm in a college situation during Georgia’s spring game, it was blatantly obvious that this guy had something special. He’s calm, cool, and collected under pressure and he has a super strong arm. He didn’t show that much running ability, but he is mobile and can escape pressure. He threw for 2,615 yards and 26 touchdowns as a true freshman and helped his team to the national championship game. Fromm is a special player, but Justin Fields may challenge.

6. McKenzie Milton – UCF: Central Florida was the surprise of the country last season and Milton was incredible. Reasonably, I know Milton has zero chance to win a Heisman just like UCF had no shot at getting in the playoffs last season. But, McKenzie Milton is worthy of respect and a lot of it.

The sophomore Milton threw for over 4,000 yards and 37 touchdowns. As if that wasn’t enough, he also ran for over 600 yards and 8 more touchdowns. The kid is a winner and he’s a play maker. He’s on the small side, but he’s a very talented player no matter what size he is. Milton was one of the main contributors to an impressive 13-0 record and a win over the Auburn Tigers.

7. Trace McSorley – Penn State: Now going into his third year as a starter and the Nittany Lions are having success like the glory Paterno years. A large part of that is because of the play of McSorley. Some Penn State fans disagree and would like to see Tommy Stevens in at quarterback and I like Stevens, too. But, McSorley is a winner and always has been. Penn State was 7-6 before McSorley took over as the quarterback. Since then, they have been really good with an 11-3 record in 2016 and an 11-2 record in 2017. More of the same should be expected in 2018.

8. AJ Brown – Ole Miss: The Rebels have had some outstanding receivers in recent seasons and AJ Brown may be the best of the bunch. The 6-1, 225 Brown is built more like a running back than a wide receiver, but he is the best of a talented wide receiver group at Ole Miss. From Starkville, Mississippi which is the home of rival Mississippi State, Brown will be the Rebels’ biggest weapon next season. In 2017, the sophomore Brown caught 75 passes for an impressive 1,252 yards and 11 touchdowns. If things go as expected, Brown will catch even more balls in 2018 and then declare for the NFL and be a top draft pick.

9. Jarrett Stidham – Auburn: If Auburn has a great season, expect Stidham to move up the list. He definitely made Auburn a better team almost instantly. The Stephenville, Texas product originally signed with Art Briles and Baylor, but when all of the controversy took place Stidham left and spent a year in a junior college. Stidham has a big arm and is a tremendous athlete. Auburn may have been a strange selection for his transfer destination, but he did throw for over 3,000 yards as a first year starter and helped the Tigers beat Alabama for the first time since 2013. Look for more of the same this season as the weakened SEC East looks for somebody, anybody, to challenge Alabama for the title.

10. Cam Akers – Florida State: Akers was the highest ranked recruit in the country a year ago at

That came with a really bad season for the Seminoles who lost their starter at quarterback in the opening game. Akers proved to be one of the few bright spots on a team that really should have done a lot better. Dalvin Cook came in with the 2014 recruiting class and busted through the 1,000 yard barrier, but just barely. That’s pretty much what Akers did this past season. Some compare the two, but I don’t see it so much. Akers may split time with senior Jacques Patrick under a new coaching staff, but we will see as the season gets going. Patrick is a talented big back at 6-3, 235 and Akers is more of the speedy back at 5-11, 215. It will be interesting to see what happens in Tallahassee now under new management.

11. AJ Dillon – Boston College: Boston college was much improved this past season with the addition of Dillon. The hard running 240 freshman ran for 1,589 yards and 14 touchdowns. Dillon ran for 272 yards and 4 touchdowns against Louisville in helping Boston College to a 45-42 win for the Eagles. Plus, he ran for 149 yards against Florida State and 196 yards against a really solid defense in North Carolina State. Dillon got a slow start in 2017 because of his youth, but exploded later on. With a good start in 2018 and some Boston College wins, Dillon may become very popular.
