Players of the Week October 11th

College football craziness continued this week with the suspension of Heisman Trophy frontrunner Todd Gurley.

Ole Miss and Miss State in 2 out of 3 of the top spots in the polls. That has never happened before in the history of college football.

There were fewer outstanding individual performances this week than in weeks past so I made a few temporary changes.

The entire Georgia Bulldog team deserves some mention, but particularly the defense. They stepped up as one when teammate Gurley was suspended and moved into the lead in the SEC East standings.

Georgia went into Columbia, Missouri and completely dominated the Missouri Tigers. Missouri’s high powered offense was held to 147 total yards and Maty Mauk was held to 97 yards through the air.

It was an incredible defensive performance by the Bulldogs shutting out the Missouri Tigers and winning the game, 34-0.

The Bulldogs’ defense picked off 4 Maty Mauk passes and harassed him constantly throughout the day. Mauk was only 9 out of 21 passing in the game. The Bulldogs defense must have heard all week about how they weren’t good without Gurley and they probably got sick and tired of hearing about how great Missouri Defensive Ends Shane Ray and Markus Golden are.

On the other side of the ball, Quarterback Hutson Mason had a solid day going 22 out of 28 for 156 yards and a Touchdown.

The healthy and eligible Running Backs that the Dogs had available also stepped up with true freshman Nick Chubb rushing for 143 yards and sophomore Brendan Douglas had 65 yards.

The Bulldog offense wasn’t spectacular, but was solid enough to win this game especially with the defense doing so well.

The Bulldogs sit at 3-1, but have a tough road ahead with games at Arkansas and Kentucky. They have Florida at Jacksonville and host Auburn. It’s going to be tough, but still they control their own destiny.

One of the best individual performances from Saturday came out of Waco, Texas and Baylor Quarterback Bryce Petty.

Petty led his Baylor Bears in a 61-58 comeback victory over TCU with 510 yards passing and 6 Touchdowns from 28 out of 55 passing. Petty also threw 2 interceptions which almost matched his entire year total from 2013.

Baylor moved to 6-0 after their only test of the season, but I would worry about having to score 61 points to win a game.

Hau’oli Kikaha and Shaq Thompson -Washington Huskies. The Huskies defense is just going nuts right now and they are 3rd in the nation in sacks as a team. They shut down offensive powerhouse Cal on Saturday with an amazing performance. Kikaha had 9 tackles, 3 sacks and 4.5 tackles for losses while dominating the Golden Bears. Kikaha leads the nation in sacks with 10 and he also leads in tackles for losses with 13.

Teammate Shaq Thompson had 11 tackles against the Golden Bears, and he had a 100 yard fumble return for a score. Thompson plays Linebacker and this is his 5th Touchdown on the season so far. Three of those Touchdowns were from fumble returns and 1 was from an interception return. His other Touchdown came while doing his best Myles Jack impersonation.

Buck Allen- USC. Buck Allen was considered a Heisman candidate as the season got started, but dropped out of the race because of the Trojans bad performance at Boston College. Now, Buck Allen may be back after last Saturday’s game against Arizona.

Buck Allen had 26 carries for 205 yards and 3 Touchdowns while leading his team over the Arizona Wildcats and giving them their first loss. With 6 games under his belt, Allen now has 781 yards and 7 Touchdowns. He is on pace to rush for just under 1,600 yards and if the Trojans finish out strong he could be back in the race.
