Drew Lock Missouri Quarterback

Missouri has been known of late for great defensive linemen. In the 2015 recruiting class, the Tigers signed the nation’s top Defensive Lineman, Terry Beckner Jr, from the famous East St Louis High School. But, they also signed one of the top Quarterbacks in the nation in Drew Lock.

Drew Lock was a very heralded Quarterback coming out of high school. He was also a top shooting guard in basketball. when recruited he had to choose between the 2 sports and he chose football ultimately.

In the 2015 season, Missouri had junior Maty Mauk who helped the Tigers win the SEC East in 2014. In all fairness, they won mostly because of defense. But Mauk was an experienced returning starter. The Tiger coaches had the option of laying Mauk while slowly bringing along top recruit Drew

Lock.

But, things sometimes don’t work out as they should.

Maty Mauk was suspended after the 4th game and then briefly came back before being kicked off the team.

True freshman Drew Lock was forced into the starting lineup.

I’d love to say that Drew Lock came in and was an instant success, but I’d be lying. It was a struggle for Drew Lock and Missouri. There was also a struggle for Missouri’s coach, Gary Pinkel, when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and he announced his retirement.

In 2013 and 2014 the Tigers won the SEC East, but 2015 was a nightmare for them. They finished with a 5-7 record and only beat South Carolina in the SEC.

With Pinkel retiring as the Missouri coach, they promoted Tiger Defensive Coordinator Barry Odom to head coach.

Odom hired former Oklahoma Quarterback Josh Heupel as it’s Offensive Coordinator. Lock looked like a freshman because he couldn’t read defenses.

After working with Heupel, Lock is looking like one of the most improved players in the entire

country in 2016. As a freshman, Lock threw 4 Touchdown passes and he threw 8 Interceptions. After just 4 games in 2016, Lock has 14 Touchdown passes against only 3 Interceptions.

In 2015, he threw for 1,332 yards and so far this year he has 1,508 passing yards. The Tigers are sitting with a 2-2 record after 4 games with the meat of their schedule coming up.

Drew Lock is showing that talent now that made him a top recruit in 2015. He has a good arm, he can run well enough and now he is looking like the top Quarterback he was predicted to be.

Missouri is playing at LSU on Saturday and they may not get a win because the entire team is learning and growing like Lock right now.

But, the game will be worth watching because of the improvement of Lock and the story behind the firing of Les Miles last Sunday.
