Stanford Spring Game 2014

Kevin Hogan is back for his third season to start, but he had his struggles in this game and especially early on. The Cardinal only had 2 QBs to play and the other one was Ryan Burns from Virginia. Burns struggled pretty much throughout and his first pass was intercepted and returned for a TD by Chandler Dorrell.hogan

The defense pretty much dominated the offense other than the final few minutes of the scrimmage.

Stanford fans apparently had other things to do on the day of the scrimmage, because there were very few there.

First team offense were missing super star WR Ty Montgomery and RB Remound Wright who was suspended for the final spring practices.

Andrus Peat started at LT and he is a future top NFL draft pick, but the rest of the Offensive Line seriously lacks depth. Other than Peat, the defense pretty much beat the offensive line up most of the day.stanford ol

Kelsey Young got first shot at RB and then Ricky Seale got second shot before Barry Sanders got in the game. Barry Sanders is clearly the best RB, but I suppose the Stanford coaches have their reason.scrimmage

Stanford Fullback Lee Ward reminds of Auburn’s Fullback of last season, Jay Prosch. But, plays after Patrick Skov who does not remind of Jay Prosch.

Michael Rector could be a good supplement to Ty Montgomery at WR.

The defense lost a lot of top talent, but looked fantastic in this scrimmage. The defensive linemen and Linebackers looked really good but the defensive backfield also looked sharp and broke up a bunch of passes.

Both Nose Guards were dominating. Starter David Parry and back up Aziz Shittu were both forces against the Stanford Centers and Guards. Defensive End Henry Anderson was his usual outstanding self.

All LBs looked better than average and corners Wayne Lyons and Taijuan Thomas looked fantastic most of the day.

Other defensive backs Chandler Dorrell and John Flacco had good days as well.stanford symbol

If this scrimmage is any indication, the rest of the Pac 12 will have a hard time moving the ball on Stanford’s first or even second defense.

Stanford’s offense will be better than they showed today with Ty Montgomery back in the lineup and as the Offensive Linemen gain experience.stanford stadium

Stanford coach David Shaw likes to play old school smash them in the mouth football with great defense. I, for one, can appreciate that and I expect them to be hard to beat.
