2012 Class of Quarterbacks and How They Did

I am not going to deny it, I am a football recruiting junkie and always have been. I first got interested when I was a kid and saw one of the greatest Running Backs that ever lived destroy my favorite high school team that I thought was invincible.

I have been hooked ever since and that includes all schools and states.

A few months ago I took a look at the class of 2011 Quarterbacks and how they did in college. Since everyone loves the Quarterback, I am looking at the class of 2012 and how that group has done.

1. Jameis Winston (6-4, 195) Heuytown, Alabama: All Winston has done was win the Heisman Trophy and a national championship. Next, he could be the top pick in the 2015 NFL Draft if teams are willing to take a chance on his character issues.

2. Zach Kline (6-2, 205) Danville, California: Who, you might say? Kline signed with California out of high school and played a little in 2013, but was beaten out by freshman and current starter Jared Goff. Transferred to Butte CC and then to Indiana State where he will be eligible next year.

3. Gunner Kiel (6-3, 215) Columbus, Indiana: Gunner’s travels have been well documented. He committed to 3 schools before signing with Notre Dame. Then, he transferred to Cincinnati where he played really well last season when healthy. He still has a shot at a good NFL career.

4. Chad Kelly (6-3, 205) Buffalo, NY. Obviously he is the nephew of former NFL star Jim Kelly. Signed with Clemson but was booted from the team. He transferred to a JC and is now at Ole Miss where he is expected to take over for Bo Wallace. Kelly has a strong arm and runs really well and still has an opportunity to not be a bust.

5. TJ Millweard (6-4, 225) Fort Worth, Texas: He signed with UCLA out of high school. Has since moved on to Kansas where he is currently 3rd string on one of the worst teams in Division 1. Clearly, he has 2 years to correct his rapidly diminishing chances of stardom, but at this point he looks like a bust.

6. Matt Davis (6-1, 205) Klein Forest, Texas: Signed with Texas A%M and then Johnny Manziel happened to him. Davis transferred to Tyler JC and then to SMU. Miserable year for the SMU Mustangs and Davis started the last 5 games.

7. Connor Brewer (6-2, 190) Scottsdale, Arizona: Originally signed with Texas and he mistakenly transferred to Arizona. Sad thing for Brewer is that he would have easily started this past season at Texas if he had stuck around, but he didn’t. At Arizona, he found himself hidden on the depth chart behind starter Anu Solomon and 2 other Quarterbacks. He is presently looking for another place to play and it could even strangely be Texas.

8. Ford Childress (6-4, 205) Houston, Texas: Out of high school, Childress signed with the West Virginia Mountaineers. He is currently looking for another home. Son of former Aggie great Ray Childress.

9. Chad Voytik (6-0, 195) Cleveland, Tennessee: Western Pennsylvania was once the best location on earth to recruit a Quarterback, but those days are gone along with the industry. Pittsburgh went to Tennessee to sign a Quarterback and he is the current starter for them. He passed for 2,233 yards and 16 Touchdowns and he ran for 466 yards and 3 more Touchdowns. He will be a junior next season and has the potential to improve.

10. Cyler Miles (6-3, 210) Denver, Colorado: Signed with the Washington Huskies where he is the current starter. He threw for 2,397 yards and 17 Touchdowns in his first season as a starter. As a great athlete, he also ran for 307 yards and 4 more Touchdowns. The Huskies signed some good

Quarterbacks the last 2 seasons and it will be interesting to see if Miles can hold them off.

Others of interest on that year’s list:

13. Sean Maguire (6-2, 195) West Orange, New Jersey: Jameis Winston’s back up and could start for the Seminoles next year if he beats out the other contenders.

14. Nate Sudfield (6-5, 220) Modesto, California: Was Indiana’s starter this past season until injured. NFL prospect

16. Maty Mauk (6-1, 190) Kenton, Ohio: Star at Missouri and on my Preseason All SEC team.

22. Trevor Knight (6-2, 190) San Antonio, Texas: Has been a starter at Oklahoma when not injured but his biggest claim to fame is Pop Star Katy Perry saying he was cute on national television.

30. Will Gardner (6-4, 210) Douglas, Georgia: Starter at Louisville when not injured.

37. Greyson Lambert (6-4, 210) Jessup, Georgia: Started at Virginia.

39. Travis Wilson (6-7, 215) San Clemente, California: Starts for Utah.

42. Wes Lunt (6-5, 190) Rochester, Illinois: Signed with Oklahoma State and played but then transferred to Illinois where he started in 2014.

47. Seth Russell (6-3, 195) Garland, Texas: Should start at Baylor next year which means he will put up huge numbers.

52. Tommy Armstrong (6-1, 195) Cibilo, Texas: Starts for Nebraska.

62. Thomas Sirk (6-4, 210) Glen Saint Mary, Florida: Run specialist for the Duke Blue Devils last season and could start this year.

76. James Knapke (6-3, 185) Fort Wayne, Indiana: Current starter at Bowling Green.

90. Cooper Rush (6-3, 220) Lansing, Michigan: Good player for Central Michigan.

So, what does this all mean? It means that recruiting is a crap shoot. It’s hit and miss and always hasĀ  been. 16 out of the top 100 Quarterbacks from the 2012 recruiting class have actually panned out, so far.

It worked out really well for Florida State, but nearly all other schools that signed Quarterbacks had to try it again in 2013.
