Florida Spring Football Game

Jeff Driskel is back, and if the Gators are to be competitive in 2014 he will have to be healthy. The Gators offense went to pot when Driskel went down. He’s got the arm and can move for a 6-4,240 man.driskel 2

However, Skyler Mornhinweg looks like a completely different QB this year than last and had a good performance in the Spring Game.

Gator Haters are not going to like Will Grier. The true freshman from Davidson, North Carolina is a talent, a super talent. Grier has an extremely strong arm and he can run if he gets in danger.
Grier was an incredible high school QB who threw for just under 15,000 yard and ran for just under 3000 yards. Stats don’t always matter, but Grier is good and showed as much in this scrimmage.

The Gator offense was pathetic in 2013, but Head coach Will Muschamp hired Offensive Coordinator Kurt Roper from Duke and they look much improved already after the final Spring Practice and they have all of August to keep working on it. Part of that improvement is also the return of Driskel. But, there is improvement and it looks like a possible great deal of improvement. I am even considering placing them in my top 25 now.

The Gators were obviously 4-8 last season, but their defense was solid in spite of the weak offense. Having an offense could change everything including the look on Will Muschamp’s face. angry will muschamp

Both first and second Offensive Lines were solid. The first offensive line consisted of Left Tackle DJ Humphries a former 5 star recruit that is living up to his potential. Left Guard with the first team was Tyler Moore a one time Nebraska player. Center was Max Garcia a transfer from Maryland, but Trip Thurman took Garcia’s spot with the first team offensive line, also.

Right Guard was man monster Trenton Brown a 380 pound behemoth that played OT last year. The starting RT was Chaz Green a more normal sized 300 pound guy.

Kelvin Taylor impressively started with the first team at RB, but was spelled by Mack Brown who looked possibly even better. Best looking RB of the day, in my opinion was 5-7,225 redshirt freshman Adam Lane. He is a hard man to bring down. The key is still going to be keeping Driskel healthy and it would be nice if the Gators could redshirt Grier. Call me a Grier fan if you like, but the kid has talent by the bucket full.

Latoy Pittman is a solidly built WR and is hard to bring down after the catch. Quinton Dunbar is a good WR with some speed, but the one to watch here may be Demarcus Washington. Washington is a play maker and a dangerous guy with the ball in his hands.

Florida’s version of Mack Brown

Keep an eye on Florida this year in the SEC East. Auburn, Missouri and Duke were probably the biggest surprises of 2013, but a Florida with a healthy Driskel may be the team we are all talking about at the end of 2014.

The Gators may have developed some depth in the Offensive Line. They are pretty deep at RB and they have some serious talent at the WR and some TEs but watch for true freshman out of Kansas, Deandre Goolsby. He’s a big kid that can run and has some hands.

Second team OL looked like Trip Thurman Left Tackle, Nolan Kelleher at Left Guard, with Kavaris Harkless at Center, and Drew Savory at Right Guard. Nick Davis lined up at Right Tackle but is a bit undersized.

Nobody much uses a Fullback much anymore but the Gators have a good one in Hunter Joyer at 5-11,240.

The Gators will have a defense as long as they have Will Muschamp heading up the program. Apparently, Muschamp started the 2nd defense against the 1st offense or they sat their starters, but the guys they played on defense looked good at times.

Brian Cox Jr and Alex McCalister started at the Defensive Ends and both look like future stars. Cox is a beast and McCalister brings excellent quickness off of the edge.

Jonathon Bullard and Jay-nard Bostwick started at the tackle spots. The second group up front consisted of true freshman Taven Bryan and Jordan Sherit at the ends. Caleb Brantley and Joey Ivie at the tackles.

Young Defensive Backs, Duke Dawson, Jalen Tabor and Mick Washington looked really good. Also, Marcel Harris, and Keanu Neal were all over the field.driskel

If the Spring Game is any indication, the Gators should be improved next season. If the defense is anywhere near as good as last season and the offense can stay healthy, they may be a threat again really soon. They probably won’t end up 4-8 again in 2014.
