These are the best true freshmen players I have noticed on each ACC team this year so far. I am not including redshirt freshmen.
Boston College:
Jeff Smith QB Clearwater, Florida: Smith and redshirt freshman Troy Flutie were rushed into playing duties when starting Quarterback Darrius Wade was lost to injury. Smith is a tremendous athlete, but struggles in the passing game presently. He can run, but Flutie is more of the passer.
Ray Smith DT Carlsbad, California: Boston College has the top defense in the country at this point of the season and Smith is a back up with strong potential especially against the run.
Chris Lindstrom OG Dudley, Massachusetts: It used to be a rare thing for Offensive linemen to start as true freshmen, but Lindstrom was inserted into the starting lineup.
Jordan Gowins RB South Huntington, New York: Gowins has seen limited playing time as a true freshman.
Clemson:
Mitch Hyatt OT Suwanee, Georgia: Hyatt was the 2nd ranked Offensive Tackle in this past recruiting class, but I think he’s the best Offensive Tackle in the past few years. Hyatt is just a cut above other Offensive Linemen. He moves so well laterally and is great in the run game as well as the passing game. Just a future 1st round draft pick honing his skills on the college level.
Deon Cain WR Tampa, Florida: The second ranked Wide Receiver in the nation last year with tremendous abilities. The Tigers were set at Wide Receiver with Artavis Scott and Mike Williams, but Williams went down in the first game after a collision with the goal posts allowing others the
chance to move up. Cain is one of the leading receivers for Clemson Quarterback Deshaun Watson after Scott.
Kelly Bryant QB Piedmont, South Carolina: This is a kid that I really admire because he knew going in that Deshaun Watson was the man at Quarterback for Clemson and he came anyway. That’s also possibly a testament for the recruiting prowess of the Clemson staff. Bryant was the 10th ranked Dual Threat Quarterback in last year’s class and looks like he might eventually be a starter for the Tigers.
RayRay McCloud WR Tampa, Florida: He was listed as an athlete coming out of high school and that he is and he is using that athletic ability at Wide Receiver for the Clemson Tigers.
Jake Fruhmorgan OT Tampa, Florida: Fruhmorgan is a back up now, but is going to be another fantastic Offensive Lineman for the Tigers.
Austin Bryant DE Thomasville, Georgia: Clemson is becoming known as a quality defensive school and Bryant is a promising young Defensive End. He’s going to be dominating.
Christian Wilkins DT Suffield, Connecticut: Clemson signed a bunch of potentially great Offensive and Defensive Linemen and Wilkins is another really good one.
Albert Huggins DT Orangeburg, South Carolina: Huggins has played a little bit less than Wilkins and Bryant on the defensive line, but the potential is there.
Clemson’s latest recruiting classes are sensational and it will continue to show up on the field.
Duke:
TJ Rahming WR Powder Springs, Georgia: Super quick tiny Wide Receiver that is listed generously at 5-10, 165. He has hauled in 19 receptions on the season so far. I would guess he will also return Punts and Kicks eventually but some coaches don’t like freshman returning the ball.
Brandon Boyce DT Ft Lauderdale, Florida: Another star out of St Thomas Aquinas High School. Boyce is undersized but brings it. He wasn’t rated very highly because of his size.
Ben Humphreys LB Santa Anna, California: One of Duke’s top recruits that is already contributing to the defense.
Florida State:
Derwin James DB Haines City, Florida: James is one of the Seminoles’ leading tacklers and is a super star already and he is maturing. The first play of the Florida State Spring Game saw James intercept a pass and return it for a Touchdown and he has done nothing but get better since then.
Josh Sweat DE Chesapeake, Virginia: The coaches brought Sweat along slowly and he was
recovering from a high school injury as well. Super talented Defensive End that will dominate over the next couple of seasons.
Jacques Patrick RB Orlando, Florida: Patrick is a huge back with great speed and might be a household name already if not for Dalvin Cook. Patrick will get his carries soon and show his skills to the world. Like James, the first time Patrick touched the ball in the Spring Game he took it all the way.
George Campbell WR Tarpon Springs, Florida: Campbell may be the best in this class when all is said and done just from his sheer talent. He is playing only limited snaps currently, but this kid is a super star in the making. The Noles are loaded at Wide Receiver and Campbell will start seeing the ball more soon.
Da’Vante Phillips WR Miami, Florida: I think the Florida State recruiting class is as good as anyone’s and Phillips is another guy that’s going to be a huge star and he’s also seeing limited playing time currently.
Tarvarus McFadden CB Plantation, Florida: Outstanding Defensive Back recruit that hasn’t played a lot just because Florida State is loaded in their backfield. He is a tall DB that is all the rage these days.
Georgia Tech:
Marcus Marshall RB Raleigh, North Carolina: The 5-10, 210 Marshall leads the Rambling Wreck in rushing so far this season as a true freshman.
Will Bryan OT Carnesville, Georgia: Bryan has had to step into a starting role due to injury and has performed well. He looks like he’s going to be a good Offensive Linemen.
AJ Gray DB Sandersville, Georgia: Gray is already starting in the secondary and is the team’s 8th leading tackler. He is a good sized Defensive Back at 6-1, 215.
Brant Mitchell LB Knoxville, Tennessee: Mitchell is a good sized young Inside Linebacker that has played in a hurry and has huge potential for the future.
Victor Alexander LB Jacksonville, Florida: The standard speedy and talented Florida football player that will be a good one for Georgia Tech.
Louisville:
Lamar Jackson QB Boynton Beach, Florida: Special player. Jackson was rated as the 13th best Dual Threat Quarterback in the country. I have to wonder if anyone saw him play that rated him, because this guy is really good and will only get better with experience. Somebody should keep an eye on sophomore Kyle Bolin when and if he decides to transfer from Louisville for playing time. He’s not a bad player in his own right, but Jackson beat him out. Jackson leads the team in passing and rushing.
Geron Christian OT Ocala, Florida: Christian was only the 53rd ranked Offensive Tackle in the country, but is clearly a talented newcomer up front and will help Louisville over the next few years. Florida puts out some serious football talent year after year. He starts at the all important Left Tackle position.
Devante Peete WR Ft Lauderdale, Florida: St Thomas Aquinas just keeps putting out player after player and Peete looks like a future super star. Peete is a 6-4 guy with speed and hands.
Kenny Thomas OT Prattville, Alabama: Louisville starts two true freshmen tackles and several other freshmen on offense, so don’t write them off. They will all be good again.
Traveon Samuel WR Phenix City, Alabama: Tiny guy, but a lot of speed, with 14 catches so far and a Kick Off return for a Touchdown.
Jaylen Smith WR Pascagoula, Mississippi: The Cardinals have a lot of young talent at Wide Receiver and Smith already has 18 catches this year. These three super freshmen Wide Receivers will continue working with Lamar Jackson and continue improving.
Jaire Alexander CB Charlotte, North Carolina: Louisville had a defensive coach in Charlie Strong and now they have an offensive minded coach and most of their young talent is on offense. But, Jaire Alexander looks like an up and coming Cornerback.
Miami:
Mark Walton RB Miami, Florida: With super talented sophomore Joseph Yearby around, it took some courage for Walton to sign with Miami. He is a good one in his own right. The speedster is the Canes second leading receiver behind Yearby and a star.

Lawrence Cager WR Towson, Maryland: He a tall and talented Wide Receiver at 6-5. Cager has only 4 receptions, but there’s a some talent ahead of him currently.
North Carolina:
Andre Smith LB Jacksonville, Florida: True freshman Linebacker that is currently 8th on the Tar Heel team in tackles and looks like a top Linebacker in the future.
Jalen Dalton DE Clemmons, North Carolina: Dalton is a huge Defensive End with a load of
potential. At 6-6, 280 he may outgrow the position.
Tommy Hatton C Montvale, New Jersey: He’s the back up Center and was the second rated Center prospect in the country last year.
Ty’son Williams RB Sumter, South Carolian: He hasn’t done much as of yet, but he was the 15th rated Running Back prospect in the country and he has good size and speed.
North Carolina State:
Nyheim Hines WR Garner, North Carolina: Good in state talent with a bright future. He is off to a slow start with only 5 catches.
Darien Roseboro DE Lincolnton, North Carolina: This kid is a beast and should improve their defense with some experience under his belt.
Reggie Gallaspy II RB Greensboro, North Carolina: The Wolfpack had a good recruiting year in state. He is currently 4th on the team in rushing.
Riley Nicholson LB Kissimee, Florida: Compactly built young Linebacker that should make a good Linebacker for the Wolfpack.
Pittsburgh:
Jordan Whitehead DB Monaca, Pennsylvania: It’s only fitting that the former Defensive Coordinator in his first head coaching job at Pittsburgh, Pat Narduzzi, would have a defensive player at the top of his recruiting list. Whitehead was Pitt’s top recruit and is their top freshman player, so far.
Darrin Hall Jr RB Youngstown, Ohio: Good freshman Running Back that backs up redshirt
freshman Qadree Ollison. Star Running Back James Conner went down in game one due to injury.
Quadree Henderson WR Wilmington, Delaware: Super quick Wide Receiver and return man. Pittsburgh, under Narduzzi looks like a future threat in the ACC. The man does know defense.
Syracuse:
Eric Dungey QB Lake Oswego, Oregon: I don’t know how Syracuse was able to snatch up a player from Oregon, but if Dungey could stay healthy he can be a good player for them at Quarterback.
Jordan Fredericks RB Cedarhurst, New York: Syracuse was famous for it’s Running Backs in the past and Fredericks is not one of those kind of talents. But, he might be a good one for Syracuse. He presently leads the team in tackles.
Cody Conway OT Plainfield, Illinois: Backup Left Tackle that should start there next season.
Dontae Strickland RB South Brunswick, New Jersey: Another promising young Running Back.
Steven Clark DT Guntersville, Alabama: Syracuse is a really young team in a lot of areas and Steven Clark looks like a good young Defensive Lineman for them.
Kielen Whitner DB Lawrenceville, Georgia: Syracuse is making inroads into the South for recruiting and Whitner joins other prospects like Clark helping their defense out.
Virginia:
Eric Gallon LB Lakeland, Florida: Speedy Linebacker from the state of Florida that could be really good for the Cavaliers as he gains experience.
Olamide Zaccheaus RB Philadelphia: One of the bright new Offensive players for the Cavaliers.
David Eldridge WR Bealeton, Virginia: Virginia had an outstanding class last season and added to it with some young talent like Eldridge this past year. He has seen only limited playing time so far.
Virginia Tech:
Tim Settle DT Manassas, Virginia: Settle is not playing currently, but he is going to be a great one and he is a 5 star recruit and will dominate.
Adonis Alexander LB Charlotte, North Carolina: Speedy young player is currently 3rd on the team in tackles.
Mook Reynolds CB Greensboro, North Carolina: Reynolds is the starting Nickel Back for the
Hokies and he looks like a promising young ball hawk. Virginia Tech always seems to find them and Reynolds was a 4 star coming out of high school.
Dwayne Lawson QB Tampa, Florida: Potentially, Dwayne Lawson is as good as they come. He was the 5th highest rated Dual Threat Quarterback in the country and is 6-6, 230. Due to the injury to starting Quarterback Michael Brewer, Lawson was forced into playing time and he probably should have gotten a redshirt year.
Joshua Nijman OT Maplewood, New Jersey: A potentially great future Left Tackle for the Hokies. Was recruited as a 4 star Defensive Tackle and moved over to offense.
Wake Forest:
Kendall Hinton QB Durham, North Carolina: Durham produced the Minor League Baseball Bulls, and now Kendall Hinton. He is a true freshman Quarterback that can run and throw and is the back up to John Wolford. He has had to play some and put up good numbers in the air and on the ground.
Wolford was a freshman last year and combines with Hinton to suggest a better future for the Demon Deacons.
Chuck Wade WR Jacksonville, Florida: Wade is one of the better young receivers for Wake with 19 catches on the year so far.
Tabari Hines WR Bennettville, South Carolina: Hines is right there with Wade and redshirt freshman WR for Wake Forest, Cortez Lewis. Hines has 17 receptions.
Tyler Bell RB Mobile, Alabama: Wake Forest needs some young Running Backs to step up and Bell is one of those.
Matt Colburn RB Irmo, South Carolina: Colburn is another young Running Back with promise for the Demon Deacons.
Chris Calhoun LB Roswell, Georgia: Wake Forest doesn’t play bad defense and Calhoun has helped them out as a true freshman.
