Best Cornerbacks 2017

Until I get hired by some NFL team to scout college players, I don’t have the means to travel throughout the land and see these guys in person. I observe what I can from where I am and these are my thoughts on who the best Cornerbacks are early in the 2017 season. This will obviously change as the season progresses.

Oh, and my first sentence was a hint for any possible NFL teams if they are looking to hire.

1. Tarvarus McFadden – Florida State: The Seminoles have the best safety and the best cornerback this season. Deal with it. McFadden had 8 picks a year ago and while he’s not likely to repeat that, the 6-2, 200 McFadden should be the first cornerback taken in the next NFL Draft.

2. Anthony Averett – Alabama: Even Bama wants to go to New Jersey and recruit players like Averett and Minkah Fitzpatrick. Averett is 6-0, 185 but very physical.

3. Iman Marshall – USC: Big and physical cornerback that’s good against the run or the pass.

He’s been one of the Trojan’s top tacklers from his corner spot the last couple of years.

4. Quenton Meeks – Stanford: A big cornerback at 6-2, 195 that is also a ball hawk and a play maker. If he intercepts the ball, Meeks is likely to return it for a score.

5. Jaire Alexander – Louisville: Alexander was a pre-season All American by most people, but he was injured on opening day against Purdue. He is a top cornerback as well as a top return man especially on punts.

6. Rashard Fant – Indiana: Smallish cornerback at 5-10, 175, but he continuously makes plays and breaks up passes. He’s a 4 year starter and kind of reminds of Michigan’s Jourdan Lewis who is now playing in the NFL. Just all over the receivers that he guards.

7. MJ Stewart – North Carolina: Stewart had 4 picks last season and the 6-0, 205 senior is back for more this season. Very physical player.

8. Alijah Holder – Stanford: The Cardinal’s season is seemingly in trouble, but their defensive backfield is mostly very good. Holder is great sized at 6-2, 190 and he has a nose for the football.

9. CJ Henderson – Florida: When do the Gators not have good defensive backs? Henderson is a good sized freshman from Miami that already has 2 picks for touchdowns in his first 2 games. At 6-1, 185 he might just have a future.

10. Adonis Alexander – Virginia Tech: The perfectly named Alexander is almost linebacker sized at 6-3, 200, but he is swift and athletic. He had 4 interceptions as a freshman in 2015 to arrive on the scene in style.

11. Blace Brown – Troy: Don’t underestimate Troy and speedy Blace Brown. He had 6 picks a year ago in Troy’s 10 win season. In early games, Brown already has an interception in which he returned for a touchdown.

12. Denzel Ward – Ohio State: Very speedy cornerback that’s in his junior season and I am sure

he comes out after this year. He’s 5-10, 190 and has good coverage skills.

13. Carlton Davis – Auburn: Davis was a surprise as a freshman in 2015 and has gotten better. He’s got good size at cornerback at 6-1, 205 and is usually all over his man.

14. Brandon Facyson – Virginia Tech: The success of the Hokies the past 2 seasons is not all on Justin Fuente because of the talent already on campus. Facyson is one of 3 very good cornerbacks on the roster. At 6-2, 195, Facyson should be looked at closely by NFL teams.

15. Kevin Toliver – LSU: Once the top rated cornerback recruit in the nation, the tall Toliver still has a shot at greatness. In today’s football world, Toliver is the perfect sized cornerback at 6-3, 205.

DJ Reed – Kansas State: On the short side at 5-9, Reed is a baller at cornerback, or as a return man. He’s a Bill Snyder type of defensive player and very gritty.

17. Deatrich Nichols – USF: Nichols is a ball hawk from Miami and a play maker. He’s only 5-10, 190 but he already has 2 interceptions on this early season and has 10 for his career. Don’t throw at Nichols.
