Playoff Predictions 2018

1. Alabama: I’m not saying Alabama is my number one team, but they are the only team that’s been in every playoff since the new system started and they are a practical can’t miss to make it again. Also, if you look at their schedule, it’s really weak. They aren’t even going to be challenged until the Auburn game. Come on, man, even SEC fans should be able to see through this. Opening with Louisville, post Lamar Jackson, and they weren’t that good with Jackson even. Follow that up with the traditional weakling in Arkansas State and then Ole Miss. Sorry Rebel fans, but you won’t be that good this season, or maybe for a while. Texas A%M has a new coach and they will be learning a new system. The system worked for a 6-6 record last season at a very talented Florida State. Louisiana Lafayette? Arkansas has a new coach and then Missouri might be their biggest challenge early on. I just don’t see the Tigers doing much against a real defense, so Missouri isn’t going to be a real challenge, either. That same offense could do nothing against Texas in the Texas Bowl last season. Tennessee on the third Saturday of October will stink and need some time with a new coach, also. Mississippi State could present a challenge, but not likely. Alabama is guaranteed another playoff

spot.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa showed his talent in leading the Crimson Tide to a come from behind national title. Alabama is loaded at running back and wide receiver and their offensive line is decent.

It doesn’t even matter if Alabama lost every starter on defense, they are going to be good. You can bet on that. This is a playoff team and possible repeat national champion.

2. Clemson: The Tigers return a lot of talent, but what cost them last year was a downfield passing game, in my opinion. Quarterback Kelly Bryant is back for his senior year and he can run with the best of them. But, he’s been inconsistent throwing the football. If Bryant doesn’t get the job done, look for the Tigers to quickly turn to super freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence. They return talent at every other offensive position with a lot of experience across the board. Wide receiver Tee Higgins is primed for a breakout season, plus they have so many other gifted targets. On the defensive side of the ball, they probably have the best defensive line in all of college football which should carry them to many victories on it’s own. If Clemson can get the ball in the hands of their playmakers enough in 2018, they should take another of the playoff spots. I think the winner of this year’s national championship will be Clemson, or Georgia.

3. Georgia: Can the SEC put 2 teams in the playoffs yet again? It seems they will with Georgia returning so much talent and adding more. Gone are great running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, but not too worry the Bulldogs are stockpiling running backs. D’Andre Swift, from Philadelphia, Pa is going to be another great one, plus they have Elijah Holifield, Brian Herrion and 2 of the best recruits in the country. Jake Fromm was a sensational true freshman quarterback, but super freshman Justin Fields will challenge for playing time.

The challenges for the Bulldogs will come from maybe Florida and Auburn. But, they have a lot of easier teams to beat up on. If they were to lose to Auburn and then in the SEC championship game, they are probably out.

Georgia has been recruiting lights out and it will show up again on the field this season. The most interesting story for fans could be the battle between quarterback Jake Fromm and super talented young Justin Fields. Fromm was a very impressive true freshman and could hold him off, but Fields has that running ability that wins football games, too. Stay tuned, but not to the stinking Paul Finebaum show.

4. Wisconsin: I like the Badgers here for one reason alone, their offensive line. They return all 5 starters and 3 of those guys are projected as first round draft picks. Michael Deiter, David Edwards and Beau Benzschawel are road graders and seek out and destroy defensive linemen. Superstar sophomore running back Jonathan Taylor broke Adrien Peterson’s freshman rushing record and

behind this offensive line he is set to do more, if he remains healthy. Quarterback Alex Hornibrook has experience and should be improved.

The Badger defense will always be solid and this year will be more of the same. I usually think Wisconsin is overrated, but I like them this season because of their standard good defensive play and the talent returning on offense with the ability to pass the football.

The Badgers rarely sign any 5 star guys, but they get the most out of their players and probably more so than any other program. I would not normally place Wisconsin here, but I love the offensive line, Jonathan Taylor and I am counting on experience paying off for Hornibrook. Plus, their defense is tough as usual.

Wisconsin plays at Michigan and at Penn State, so this could be really interesting.

5. Ohio State: I don’t know what’s going on with the Buckeyes right now as far as head coaches are concerned. But, the Buckeyes possess about as much talent as anyone. With JT Barrett gone at quarterback, Ohio State turns to Dwayne Haskins and that might be a good thing when all is said and done. Haskins is not as strong of a runner, but he has a better arm. They lost their best offensive lineman but still return plenty of talent up front and they are super talented at running back, as usual, with sophomore sensation JK Dobbins and junior Mike Webber both returning.

The defense will be stout and speedy as usual. They return such talents as Nick Bosa, Damon Arnette, Kendall Sheffield and sensational youngster Chase Young. The Buckeyes will be stout, but who knows what’s going to happen with the Urban Meyer situation. If he returns, don’t count them out.

The Big 10 is getting stronger across the board. The Buckeyes have to travel to Penn State and that won’t be an easy task. They also play at Michigan State and do not count out a trip to Purdue. The Boilermakers are a different ball club under head coach Jeff Brohm and they have a history of upsetting the Buckeyes over the decades, so does Michigan State going back to Woody Hayes days. They host Michigan and the Wolverines are not the chumps everybody is talking about now. The Buckeyes are good, but they have a tough schedule, also.

6. Oklahoma: The Sooners lost Heisman winner and former walk-on sensation and first round pick Baker Mayfield. But, don’t shed a tear over the Sooners because young Kyler Murray can get it done. He’s a much better runner than Mayfield, but people will be surprised by his arm. The only thing he lacks is size. The Sooners also return their talented receivers other than their tight end, and a lot of talent in the offensive line.

The defense has been a little lacking in recent years and that’s why they are not number 4 on my list. They still have an outside shot at making it. With a better defense last season, the Sooners might have won it all. Don’t laugh, they seem to have Alabama’s number.

7. Washington: If the Huskies can beat Pac 12 North nemesis, Stanford, they could be prepared for another playoff shot. The last one did not go so well, but it was a learning experience for the Huskies. They return a lot of the same players and starters off of that team with 4 year starters at quarterback in Jake Browning, running back in Myles Gaskin and offensive tackles Trey Adams and Caleb McGary.

The defense is led by former running back, 6-1, 320 Greg Gaines and safety Taylor Rapp among others. This is a well coached team with some speed across the board and size on both lines.

Adams and McGary are both 6 foot 8 and potential first round draft picks. They don’t back down. We will find out early about the Huskies because they open the season against Auburn, which is a pretty tough challenge. But, otherwise, they have a very favorable schedule.

8. Penn State: The Nittany Lions lost maybe the best player in college football last season in Saquon Barkley. You don’t really replace a Barkley, but Miles Sanders is a talented junior just chomping at the bit looking for his shot. However, the glue that holds the Penn State Nittany Lions together is

quarterback Trace McSorley. Not a big guy, or particularly overly talented, McSorley just has that ‘it’ factor that everyone talks about. He’s just a winner and has been on every level.

Another factor in Penn State’s favor is returning every starter on their offensive line. The offensive line was a problem for the Nittany Lions for years after the scandal and they had no depth. But, it’s been revitalized and it’s one of the better offensive lines in the country now. Penn State also returns some serious talent at wide receiver led by Juwan Johnson and they signed the top wide receiver prospect in the county in Justin Shorter. It will be impossible to keep him off the field.

Penn State lost a few guys on defense, but they return some talent as well, plus the addition of blue chip guys like Micah Parsons. James Franklin is getting it done at Penn State and don’t overlook them.
