Alabama Running Backs 2017

During last year’s playoff game against Washington Alabama Running Back Bo Scarbrough broke a Touchdown run and basically put the game away. The Washington offense was not going to score again.

The game’s commentators said that he reminded them of former Bama Running Back Eddie Lacy. My son looked at me and asked if the commentator was kidding. Scarbrough, complete with the hair hanging out of the back of his helmet looked incredibly similar to Heisman winner Derrick Henry and it should have been blatantly obvious. Or, so we thought.

Henry is 6-3, 240 and Scarbrough is 6-2, 230. They are of similar size and both have good speed,

then there’s that hair thing.

Scarbrough is a former 5 star recruit and a home town guy from Tuscaloosa. In 2015, Scarbrough carried the ball only 18 times for 104 yards and a score. With Henry winning the Heisman in 2015 after running for an amazing 2,219 yards and 28 Touchdowns, and moving on to the NFL, it was thought by some that Bo Scarbrough was the top prospect to replace him.

The 2016 season was more of a Running Back by committee situation.

Sophomore Damien Harris ran for 1,037 yards and 2 Touchdowns and averaged 7.10 yards per carry. The 5-11, 215 Harris is from Berea, Kentucky and he was the 2nd rated Running Back in the nation in the recruiting class of 2015 by ESPN.

Bo Scarbrough was in the 2014 class and a 5 star rated as the 2nd best athlete in the nation. But, he didn’t qualify academically, and he signed with the Tide again in 2015.

Scarbrough got off to a slow start in 2016 with only 164 yards rushing after 6 games. But, against the Razorbacks of Arkansas, Scarbrough broke out with 109 yards rushing on only 5 carries. His next two games were not huge as far as production, and then he missed two entire games.

The last four Alabama gamesĀ  were his best and he rushed for 454 yards and 6 Touchdowns. On the

season, Scarbrough ran for 812 yards and 11 Touchdowns, but most importantly he set himself up as the probable front runner for 2017.

In the 2016 recruiting class, the Crimson Tide signed one of the nation’s top Running Backs in BJ Emmons from Morgantown, North Carolina. As should be expected, Emmons tore up the field in high school rushing for over 2,000 yards in each of his junior and senior seasons. He ran for 2,348 yards and 38 Touchdowns as a junior, and then upped that in his senior season with 2,417 yards and 41 Touchdowns.

Nick Saban and Alabama tend to like the bigger backs, and Emmons is not quite there yet. Coming out of high school, he was 6-0, 205, but he is big enough to put on plenty of muscle without losing speed. The Spring roster has Emmons already up to 220 pounds.

As a freshman, Emmons was used sparingly and ran for only 173 yards and a score.

The surprise last season for Alabama was the emergence of true freshman Joshua Jacobs from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Rated only a 3 star and the 36th best Running Back by ESPN, Jacobs ran for 567 yards and 4 Touchdowns. Jacobs had 100 yards rushing against Kentucky and 89 yards against Mississippi State, but he received less playing time towards the end of the season.

Ronnie Clark was a 4 star Running Back in the class of 2014 and he’s played very little. Clark is 6-2, 215 and going into his junior season with very little playing time behind him, Any chance of breaking out in 2016 was nullified by torn Achilles tendon and he missed most of the season.

As if those guys weren’t enough, there are true freshmen and early enrollees Brian Robinson and Chadarius Townsend. Both are 4 star recruits and Robinson was rated the 18th best Running Back recruit and Townsend the 13th rated athlete.

Robinson is that big back that everybody craves and is listed at about 6-1, 220 and being a home

town guy from Tuscaloosa he was hard to pass on. Townsend is much smaller at 6-0, 190 and he played Quarterback in high school. Both of these guys were top 10 recruits in the state of Alabama. Both have a chance to prove themselves this Spring.

Nothing against Robinson or Townsend, but the biggest prize at Running Back should be another true freshman. Najee Harris was another Running Back that was rated as either the top back in the country, or second best depending on which recruiting service you use. Harris is another huge back along the lines of Derrick Henry and Bo Scarbrough at around 6-2, 230.

Harris is also already at Alabama and competing for playing time.

Does any school have a better group of Running Backs than the Alabama Crimson Tide? No, and it’s not even really close.

8 Running Backs on campus and all of them wanting to be the next Derrick Henry, or Mark Ingram. Nick Saban’s hardest task in 2017 may be in keeping all of these talented guys happy.

That’s one of the most talented depth charts you will ever see.
