Pittsburgh Panthers Running Backs 2016

There was a time when the Pittsburgh Panthers were one of the top programs in the country. Pitt Panthers Heyday

But, that was a long time ago and the Panthers have had some rough years in recent times. I believe with the hiring of head coach Pat Narduzzi, the Pitt Panthers could be on their way back.

They have a little talent especially on offense.

James Conner was recruited to Pittsburgh from Erie, Pennsylvania as a Defensive End in the 2013 class. As a true freshman, they moved him to Running Back and he ran for 799 yards in 2013.

2014 was Conner’s time to shine and he ran for an amazing 1,765 yards and 26 Touchdowns. Coming into 2015, the 6-2, 250 Conner and Pittsburgh had high expectations and he was injured in the Panther’s opening game.

In spite of injuring his knee and getting cancer in the past year, Conner is expected to be back in 2016 with a vengeance.

The junior has 2,641 career rushing yards in two seasons and he is no doubt eager for more.

Coming in for Conner after he was injured was redshirt freshman Qadree Ollison from Niagara Falls, New York. Ollison was a 3 star recruit, but with enormous potential and good size at 6-2, 230. Conner went down in the Pittsburgh season opener and Ollison ran for 207 yards.

Ollison finished last season with 1,121 yards and 11 Touchdowns.

Pittsburgh head coach Pat Narduzzi apparently wants a speedy, more explosive Running Back as well.

Last season, they tried freshman Darrin Hall who is 5-11, 215. Hall ran for 257 yards and a couple of Touchdowns.

Chris James is a 5-11, 210 Running Back out of Chicago and he ran for 253 yards during his sophomore season.

When they wanted pure speed on the field, they seemed to turn to Wide Receiver Tyler Boyd, or Defensive Back Jordan Whitehead.

Boyd ran for 349 yards and Whitehead ran for 122. Both of these guys were apparently a step or two faster than any of their Running Backs.

They brought in Whitehead in goal line situations and he averaged 10 yards per carry.

With the 2015 recruiting class, the Panthers’ coaching staff signed George Hill from Hubbard, Ohio. Hill is a burner with reported 4.4 speed in the 40. ESPN has him as their 12th rated Running Back in the country and a 4 star recruit. He just blew by people in high school and he should be able to provide that change of pace that this coaching staff is apparently searching to find.

From Tony Dorsett’s old town, Aliquippa, Pennsylvania the Panthers signed Kaezon Pugh. He is not a huge back at around 6-2, 210 but he runs more with power than with great speed.

Chawntez Moss is from Hubbard, Ohio. The 3 star Running Back brings a good combination of speed and power. Plus, he looks like a guy that will pick up blitzes in pass protection.

The Panthers should have plenty of bodies at Running Back and they can win with James Conner, or Qadree Ollison. But, they could use some more speed there. Hopefully, they picked up some speed with one of their new recruits.

Pittsburgh did not recruit lights out like in the days of Johnny Majors and Jackie Sherrill. But, they did sign a better class than some powers like Oregon and this was their best signing class in a while. I am expecting a return to prominence of the Pittsburgh Panthers really soon.
