The Strange Roundabout Journey of Ricky Town

Back in the old days, recruiting was a slow process with schools sending out mail to recruits all over the country. Kids didn’t take their visits until after their senior season was over and they generally took all of their allotted visits. There were exceptions, of course, but not very many.

Today, recruiting starts sometimes when these players are in middle school. If a school discovers a talented kid they want to recruit during his junior season, they are called late to the party because other schools have been on the player for months, if not longer. It’s all changed, and recruiting goes on pretty much year round on the top kids.

One kid stood out with the 2015 recruiting class early on and that was Ricky Town of Ventura Saint Bonaventure High School was rated as the highest ranked quarterback in the class. He was thought of as a heavy USC lean and in the bag for the Trojans. It was said, though, that he did not like the coach of the Trojans at the time, Lane Kiffin. So. Ricky Town committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide

really early in the process.

Things weren’t going well for Lane Kiffin at USC and he was not really loved by the fans. When the Trojans got blown out by Arizona State, on the road, Kiffin was fired by Trojans athletic director Pat Haden supposedly on a bus on the way home from the airport.

Later, Nick Saban, at Alabama hired Kiffin as his new offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.

With Kiffin at Alabama now, Ricky Town switched his commitment to his early favorite, USC. Then, Town started tumbling down the rankings and he wound up at 10th on ESPN’s list. I’m not accusing ESPN of anything, but fellow Californian Blake Barnett then committed to Alabama and was the top quarterback in the class at that point. Kind of strange, but no accusations on my part from up here in the cheap seats. My vote for top quarterback was for Josh Rosen who was an immediate starter at UCLA.

USC signed two quarterbacks in the 2015 recruiting class with some guy named Sam Darnold also jumping on with the Trojans. Obviously, this Darnold guy turned out to be pretty good after he redshirted and then started after Cody Kessler used up his eligibility for USC. Darnold was just drafted with the 3rd pick of the draft.

Town was an early enrollee at USC and participated in spring drills. From my viewpoint, he looked lost and confused and out of place at the spring game. But, we don’t see the day to day things going on. Darnold was not there during the spring, but came during the summer. When fall camp opened up, Ricky Town must have seen the writing on the wall, or the talent dripping off of Sam Darnold. He announced he was transferring.

Arkansas Razorback fans were super excited to find out that a talented Californian was transferring to their football program when Town decided on Arkansas.

Of course, Ricky Town would have to sit out the customary one season due to the transfer rules in college football. But, he never played a down in Hog town.

Ricky Town was on the road again, returning to California and enrolling in Ventura College, a junior college in his home town.

There was a time when the Pittsburgh Panthers had as much talent as anybody. Bobby Bowden once said that Pittsburgh was the best team he had ever coached against. Legends like Tony Dorsett, Mike

Ditka, Dan Marino, Hugh Green, Mark May, Russ Grimm and so many others played for the Panthers back in the day.

This current team can’t hold a candle to the old Pitt teams of long ago, but they’ve been competitive in recent years. They even upset Clemson at Death Valley a couple of years ago when the Tigers were national champions.

In the latest recruiting class, the Pitt Panthers were the latest to bring Ricky Town aboard with the hopes of making him into a top flight college quarterback.

At Pittsburgh, Town will have to beat out sophomore Kenny Pickett which could prove to be a pretty tough task. Pickett came on strong at the end of last season and showed some outstanding potential. He led the team to an upset victory over the 10-0 Miami Hurricanes with Pickett throwing for 193 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 60 yards and 2 more touchdowns. Maybe not the most of impressive sounding stats, but Pickett did look the part of a potentially outstanding quarterback.

Can Ricky Town beat out Kenny Pickett, and if he can’t, will Town be moving on again? Or, will he stay and compete?

It’s time for Ricky Town to stand up and stop running and fight for a job.
