It’s Time to Consider the Houston Cougars

Forget about some of the overrated schools the media keeps talking about and I won’t mention names.

The University of Houston behind the coaching of second year head guy Tom Herman just thumped the highly rated Oklahoma Sooners. The Associated Press had the Sooners ranked 3rd and this poll had them at 4th. Most everyone had Houston ranked around 13th.

But, clearly the Houston Cougars are for real.

Oklahoma returned a lot of guys from the past season where they made the playoffs. The biggest

returner was Heisman candidate Quarterback Baker Mayfield. But, there was also power running Samaje Perine who holds the national single game rushing record that he broke as a true freshman in 2014.

Oklahoma is no slouch, and in fact, far from it. They were the preseason favorite to win the Big 12.

The Houston Cougars want to join the Big 12. It’s not schools like the University of Texas that oppose them, it’s the out of state Big 12 schools that depend on Texas and the Houston area for their recruiting. They think Houston being in the conference will interfere with their ability to recruit Houston. They may be right considering the recruitment of Ed Oliver, but that happened with the Houston Cougars being in the American Athletic Conference.

The game against Oklahoma started off like the Sooners were going to run all over the Cougars with Samaje Perine ripping off some big gains and then Joe Mixon taking it in for an impressive Touchdown run. Neither did all that much after that initial drive and Mixon finished with 40 yards rushing and Perine with 31.

Baker Mayfield completed some big passes, but the Houston Cougars mostly dominated the second half and built a 33-17 lead before winning 33-23.

Tom Herman is now the hottest name in college football coaching and Houston is a team that might

be a candidate for a playoff spot.

Offensive Coordinator Major Applewhite is considered by some as one of the bright young minds in football.

Quarterback Greg Ward Jr might also be a Heisman candidate. He won’t be considered, but he probably should be. Against the Sooners, Ward threw for 321 yards and 2 Touchdowns. The Sooners kept him in check and he only ran for 1 yard when sacks are figured into the mix. Last season, Ward threw for just under 3,000 yards and he ran for over 1,000 yards as he was one of the top dual threat Quarterbacks in the country.

Steven Dunbar is one of the top Wide Receivers in the country and against Oklahoma he caught 7 passes for 125 yards. Dunbar is a 6-3, 210 Wide Receiver with obvious great size and speed. He’s also a big time play maker.

He’s not the only talented receiver on the roster with Linell Bonner and 6-4, 205 Isaiah Johnson also catching passes from Ward.

Herman can also recruit which is something of a prerequisite for a successful college football coach and he kept 5 star Defensive Lineman Ed Oliver at home.

In his first college game and against big time competition, Oliver was a difference maker. I just wrote about Oliver here: Ed Oliver

The entire defense is pretty tough.

Houston has a relatively easy schedule other than Louisville who looked like a monster program while scoring 70 points against Charlotte.

They have a trip to Cincinnati and Memphis, but they shouldn’t be a  problem. The rest of their schedule appears to be pretty weak, honestly.

What does the playoff committee do if Houston is undefeated at the end of the season with good wins over Oklahoma and Louisville?

Houston very well could be undefeated at the end of the season and it might be time to start considering that they might have a shot at a playoff spot.
