Shon Coleman Update

Before the 2014 season, I wrote about Auburn’s Left Offensive Tackle Shon Coleman and his battle to overcome Leukemia.

Overcome it he did and he has become one of Auburn’s best players over the last two seasons.

This was all expected out of Shon Coleman coming out of high school.

There are many different recruiting services that rate high school players. had Shon Coleman as the very best player in the state of Mississippi and the 3rd rated Offensive Tackle prospect in the entire country. Other services had other opinions, but they all had him rated highly and he was one of the top ranked Offensive Tackles in the entire country.

Coleman was a member of the 2010 Auburn recruiting class and he was diagnosed with Leukemia in the Spring of that year.

After spending time at St Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis and a long time of rehab, Coleman was granted an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA. He finally made it to Auburn in 2012 and redshirted his first season.

In the 2013 season, Coleman was a back up to 1st round draft pick Greg Robinson at Left Tackle. He had been away from the sport for a couple of seasons while fighting Leukemia.

In 2014, Shon Coleman started every game at Left Tackle for the Auburn Tigers. This season was more of the same for the 6-6, 310 Coleman.

Normally, if a guy has eligibility left to play college football, I am for him returning to school. Judging from my times spent on discussion boards, or other internet sites, I seem to be the last person on earth that believes that.

I do believe if a guy is a sure thing 1st rounder that he should indeed declare, but a majority of these guys aren’t even drafted.

But, Shon Coleman is different. Coleman needs to leave with a year left.

He is 23 years old, for one thing, and very mature for his age and possibly that comes from all that he has been through.

Coleman received his Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration in May of 2014. Recently, Coleman just received his Master’s degree in Adult Education.

Shon Coleman really should declare for the NFL Draft and go play for the big bucks and I hope he gets picked really early in the first round. There’s just something about a young man with a fighting spirit like Shon Coleman that makes a person pull for him to have success.
