Playoff Adjustments

1. Alabama: The Tide is 3-0, as expected, and probably won’t be challenged soon. Alabama rules the SEC so thoroughly, that there’s little chance they don’t make the playoffs.

2. Clemson: The surprising play of new quarterback Kelly Bryant has the Clemson Tigers at the number two position. The defensive line is as good as any in the country and the Tigers are tough across the board and will get better as the season progresses.

3. Oklahoma: The Sooners played themselves here by beating Ohio State in Columbus and convincingly. They are in control of their own destiny and Baker Mayfield might take over the Heisman race after recent performances.

4. USC: The Trojans have not looked as good as expected, but they have done enough to win.

Quarterback Sam Darnold has 7 touchdown passes, but he’s also guilty of 6 interceptions. If they are for real, they should dispose of Cal and Washington State over the next 2 games.

5. Michigan: Wolverine defense looks better than expected, while the offense has been a little below expectations. The defense will have to get them through Penn State, Wisconsin and Ohio State unless the offense improves.

6. Penn State: With outstanding stars running back Saquon Barkley, quarterback Trace McSorley, tight end Mike Gesicki and wide receiver Juwan Johnson this year, the Nittany Lions have been rolling. The offensive line is one of the most improved positions on the team.

7. Oklahoma State: Quarterback Mason Rudolph is one of the best in the country as well as deep threat wide receiver James Washington. Speedy running back Justice Hill is hard to stop and their offensive line has been bolstered by graduate transfers.

8. Washington: The Huskies lost some talent from last year’s playoff team, but they also return some talent which should be better. Jake Browning is in his third season as the starting quarterback and is one of the best. Myles Gaskin and Lavon Coleman return at running backs as a powerful one-two punch.

9. Wisconsin: The Badgers are probably much better this season and the arrival of freshman running back Jonathan Taylor makes their offense a little more explosive. Also, sophomore quarterback Alex Hornibrook is really playing well. The defense is stout as usual.

10. Florida State: The Seminoles lost their quarterback and is going with a true freshman James Blackman who has yet to play a down in college. He’s a tall, skinny and wiry quarterback at 6-5, 185. The defense is amazing, which could help with the quarterback situation.

11. Ohio State: The last time the Buckeyes lost their second game, they came back and won the

national championship.

12. Mississippi State: Bulldog quarterback Nick Fitzgerald is amazing running the football and he can throw pretty well. If Fitzgerald gets past your defensive backs, then it’s a touchdown. The Bulldogs also showed great defense while plundering the Tigers of LSU last weekend.

Auburn: The Tigers have much work to do if they have a shot. Winning the Iron Bowl will be a task. Quarterback Jarrett Stidham makes them better, but will it be enough?

14. Virginia Tech: Redshirt freshman quarterback Josh Jackson is surprising and amazing people with his talent. The Hokies will challenge #2 Clemson at the end of September.

15. TCU: The Frogs have been impressive even beating Arkansas in Fayetteville convincingly. Honestly, TCU has little pull nationally and have a very small chance at making it to the Playoffs.

16. Miami: Real hurricanes have decimated the Hurricanes season, so far. This could be the best Miami team in years with a lot of young talent.

17. Colorado: The Buffaloes have improved about as much as anyone on this list. Last season, they won the Pac 12 South and they return some talent.

18. Georgia: Freshman quarterback Jake Fromm seems to have that ‘it’ factor and the Bulldogs are rolling along at 3-0. Tougher times may await them.

19. Duke: This looks to be one of the Blue Devils best teams in years with quarterback Daniel Jones leading the team much better as a sophomore.

20. Utah: Another unbeaten team with a 3-0 record. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Huntley is playing well and Utah needs to be watched.

21. Kentucky: Wildcat coach Mark Stoops has turned a corner with his Kentucky team and they are

rolling along. Stick around and see how they do against stiffer competition.

22. Oregon: Willie Taggart has changed Oregon almost instantly. With most of the same players that the Ducks won 4 games a year ago and they are just steam rolling other teams right now.

23. LSU: The Tigers were crushed by Mississippi State this past weekend and they have their struggles right now.

24. Tennessee: The Vols are struggling both offensively and defensively and it might be time to change at the top in Knoxville.

25. California: I’m not always a fan of firing coaches, but Cal made the right move switching to Justin Wilcox. The Bears are unbeaten against North Carolina and Ole Miss, plus Weber State, Unfortunately, the Golden Bears have murderer’s row awaiting with ranked USC, Oregon, Washington and Washington State lying in wait.
