Following the recruiting process almost as closely as the game itself, one of my favorite players over the past few seasons has been Mike Gesicki of Penn State. Originally from Manahawkin, New Jersey and South Regional High School, Gesicki first earned my attention from a video of him playing basketball.
I like recruits that also run track, but especially play basketball. I truly believe that a kid that is really good at basketball will make an exceptional football player as well. Yes, there are exceptions and some don’t like the contact, but in general, I like the athleticism that they bring to the gridiron.
What sold me on Gesicki was his high flying basketball video showing one fantastic slam dunk after another in between 3 point shots. After watching that video, I found those showing him playing football which were only highlights. The highlights of any player is far inferior to actual game footage and do not show if they loaf, take plays off, get beat on blocks, or whatever the case may be depending on which position they actually play. But, that was all I could find on Mike Gesicki from his high school playing days.
As a high school Tight End, Gesicki played 4 years. He had 103 receptions for 1,817 yards and 16 Touchdowns.
After taking his freshman season to acclimate to the college game with 11 catches, Mike Gesicki had a truly disappointing sophomore season in 2015. Somehow, he developed hands of stone and could not catch the ball.
Before last season, I wrote a post predicting a big season for Mike Gesicki: Gesicki
Not to brag about being right, but Gesicki truly had a great season in 2016 with the Penn State Nittany Lions winning the Big 10 East and then the Big 10 Championship. Gesicki was the team’s second leading receiver with 48 receptions for 679 yards and 5 Touchdowns. Many of those

This year, he could be even better.
At 6-6, 260 Gesicki can still wow teammates with his slam dunking prowess. He’s got a 39 inch vertical jump, can bench press at least 425 and power clean 380. Bench press is more for bragging rights, while the much more difficult power cleans build explosiveness in football players.
The knock on Gesicki may have been his blocking, but he is bigger and stronger than he has ever been and demonstrated by his vertical leap, he is just as athletic.
In the 2016 season, Mike Gesicki was one of the better Tight Ends in the country. But, in 2017, Gesicki could be the best. This guy is a talent.
