Thanks to former Michigan head coach Brady Hoke, the Wolverines were loaded along the Defensive Line. Last recruiting season, the new staff led by new coach Jim Harbaugh signed the top recruit in the entire country in Plainfield, New Jersey’s Rashan Gary. Gary
But, the talented Gary had problems getting on the field last season because of the depth at Michigan.
Rashan Gary is about 6-5, 290 and can play Defensive End, or he can slide inside and play Tackle. But, last season, the Wolverines had seniors Ryan Glasgow, Taco Charlton, Chris Wormley and
Matthew Godin. Charlton and Wormley were Ends and Glasgow and Godin were Tackles. With these guys gone, it’s majorly important for younger players like Gary to step up, which I believe he will.
As a true freshman, Rashan Gary registered 24 total tackles with 5 for loss and he had 1 Quarterback sack. Gary was also credited with 6 Quarterback hurries.
Recently, Rashan Gary supposedly ran a 4.57 which is phenomenal for a 290 pound Defensive Lineman. Gary is an incredible athlete along the lines of a Jadeveon Clowney, or a Myles Garrett. But, he’s got the potential to become much better. He could be bigger and faster than either of those examples. If he has the work ethic and desire to get better, he could be an incredible player.
Next season, Gary should start at the Weakside Defensive End for Michigan. He should be backed up by redshirt freshman Carlo Kemp and true freshmen Donovan Jeter and Luiji Vilain. That’s a serious amount of talent and nothing against the last group of Defensive Line because they should be in the NFL next season, but this group could be an upgrade long term.
On the opposite end of the line, at the Buck Linebacker should be senior Chase Winovich. The classic over achiever, Winovich has some serious heart and has a motor that won’t quit. Redshirt freshman Ron Johnson and sophomore Reuben Jones should compete for playing time here with recruits Corey Malone-Hatcher and Kwity Paye also competing for playing time.
Former walk-on Ryan Glasgow will be hard to replace at Nose Guard, but Bryan Mone has plenty of talent and is experienced. He’ll be backed by redshirt freshman Michael Dwumfour and probably true freshmen hotshots Aubrey Solomon and Phillip Paea.
Maurice Hurst could have gone on with his life, or chosen to try the NFL, but he decided to come back for another year. Hurst is a good player and he will be backed up by Lawrence Marshall who also has some experience. Incoming freshmen James Hudson and Deron Irving-Bey.
In spite of losing every starter up front on their defense, the Wolverines have a chance to be even better.
Rashan Gary also has a chance to become the best Defensive End in the country.
