Great Day for the Stoops Brothers

The Stoops, in case you have been doing the Rip Van Winkle over the past 20 years, are a coaching family from Youngstown, Ohio.

Bob Stoops is the head coach at Oklahoma and his brother Mike is his Defensive Coordinator. Last year, Bob and Mike were seen yelling at each other on the sidelines when times got hard. Mike has since taken his Defensive Coordinating responsibilities upstairs to the press box and that yelling show will not be seen on the sideline in 2015.

One has to give Bob Stoops credit because after being ranked very highly in 2014, they had

something of a bad season for Oklahoma finishing up 8-5 capped off with a very painful 33 point loss to Clemson.

Giving Bob Stoops credit, he made some serious changes in the off season firing some assistants and bringing in some new blood. Some might take that as an act of desperation and time will tell on that.

He hired the Offensive Coordinator away from East Carolina, Lincoln Riley, who was one of the hottest Coordinator prospects in the country. Bringing with him a sophisticated passing offense, the Sooners may have made some serious upgrades.

Returning starter, the inconsistent Trevor Knight, at Quarterback was replaced by Texas Tech transfer Baker Mayfield.

The Sooners usually don’t stay down long, like most top programs. Don’t expect an 8-5 record in Norman, Oklahoma to be a regular record, or expect a new coach. Sooner fans are just not going to tolerate mediocrity and 5 losses, as they shouldn’t.

Bob Stoops had to make some kind of move if for nothing else than to get the fan base off of his case. Or, to get off the hot seat, which is sort of remarkable when you consider Bob Stoops and all that he has done in Norman, Oklahoma.

In game one, the Sooners played the obligatory Junior Varsity team when they took on Akron, but you have to consider also that Arkansas thought they were taking a week off with Toledo and we all saw how that turned out.

The Oklahoma Sooners showed up for their opening game with a convincing 41 to 3 win.

For game two, the Oklahoma Sooners had to travel to Knoxville, Tennessee to take on the much improved Volunteers. Bob Stoops and his players clearly do not like the SEC and their mouths were rolling like never before. The last time the Sooners got publicity for bashing the SEC was before the Sugar Bowl and then the Sooners went out and backed it up by beating the highly favored Alabama Crimson Tide.

After the Volunteers jumped out to a 17 – 0 lead, the Sooners gamely fought back and tied it at the end of regulation 17 all.

One Overtime period later and the score was tied at 24 a piece. During the second Overtime, the Sooners scored and the Volunteers did not, which gave Oklahoma the 31-24 win.

Another Stoops brother, Mark, is coaching in the SEC at Kentucky. Coaching basketball at Kentucky is one thing, but football is an entirely different matter.

His first season at Kentucky resulted in a very disappointing 2-10 season for Stoops. But, he has recruited well from day one and has recruited some of the best classes in the history of Kentucky.

Stoops and Kentucky started off last season 5-1 and a lot of people thought they were going to make a serious run and at least get a bowl berth with 6 wins.

That didn’t happen. Kentucky lost their last 6 games of the year to finish up at 5-7. That was a huge let down for the Wildcats. However, it was a big improvement over the 2013 season by 3 wins.

In 2015, the Wildcats have started off strongly again. They beat Louisiana Lafayette in game one, but not convincingly.

On Saturday, September 12th, while the Sooners and Stoops brothers were winning in double Overtime, up in Lexington Mike Stoops and his Kentucky Wildcats jumped out to an early lead over South Carolina and then held on for a 26-22 victory.

We saw this last year with Kentucky when they traveled to Columbia and beat Steve Spurrier and his Gamecocks.

Will Kentucky jump out early and crumble as they did last season again in 2015?

I don’t know the future, but every one does know that the Stoops brothers hate puppies. They hate kittens and they hate babies, but they had a really good day on Saturday.
