DeWayne Hendrix Pittsburgh Part 2

Dewayne Hendrix was a highly recruited 4 star Defensive End from O’Fallon, Illinois that signed with the Tennessee Volunteers back in the 2014 recruiting class. I wrote about him previously here: Dewayne Hendrix

NFL teams love drafting Quarterbacks the most. But, they also love taking big, strong, fast Defensive Ends, too. They either want a Quarterback, or a guy that wants to sack the Quarterback. Obviously, football teams have a lot of needs, but a guy like Myles Garrett, or Solomon Thomas is going to be

loved by the guys in charge of the NFL Draft for any given team.

I’m not saying that Dewayne Hendrix is in that category at all. But, let’s see how all of this plays out.

At Tennessee, Hendrix was playing behind another outstanding freshman in Derek Barnett and Hendrix decided he might be better off elsewhere. From the influence of another former Tennessee football player, Quarterback Nate Peterman, Hendrix decided to move to Pittsburgh. Peterman liked it there and urged Hendrix to try it out.

Pittsburgh had a very good Offense with Peterman at Quarterback, but their defense has been weak for a while. Dewayne Hendrix moved right into the starting lineup about as soon as he hit campus.

Life must have been feeling right for Hendrix, but his euphoria was not to last. In the first game of the 2016 season, Hendrix broke his foot and was lost for the entire season. To say that was an unlucky break would be the understatement of the day for Hendrix, and no pun intended. He didn’t like how things looked for him in Tennessee, then he got his chance and he lost it almost instantly because of injury.

That’s all water under the bridge now as the 2017 football season slowly descends upon us. Pittsburgh head coach Pat Narduzzi was a Defensive Coordinator at Michigan State and obviously a defensive minded coach. His defenses at Pittsburgh have been below his standards while his teams have

finished with identical 8-5 records in 2015 and 2016.

If Narduzzi is going to take the next step, he’s going to have to get more out of his defense. Guys like Dewayne Hendrix are what he needs to challenge for the ACC championship. But, Hendrix has to remain healthy.

If he does remain on the field all season and plays well, look for him to declare for Hendrix to declare for the NFL Draft. He’s not getting any younger.
