titled the Gator Bowl, I had a change of heart.

Penn State is better off without him.

Hackenberg was the number one Pro Style Quarterback in the nation when Bill O’Brien signed him. But, O’Brien was just passing through and is an NFL guy all the way. When he left for the Houston Texans, the Nittany Lions promptly snagged up amazing Vanderbilt coach James Franklin. O’Brien was a pro style Quarterback and Franklin was a spread guy.

Hackenberg was suited for a pro style offense and never was really suited for Franklin’s offense. At around 6-4, 230, Hackenberg is a drop back passer. He has mobility, but not what you are really looking for in a spread type offense.

Trace McSorley, on the other hand, is perfectly suited for a college offense. McSorley is 6-0, 205 and is very mobile. His arm strength is just not that less than Hackenberg’s.

But, the biggest thing about McSorley is that he is a winner. In high school, McSorley led his team to a 55-5 record in 4 seasons as a starter and 3 state championships in the state of Virginia. McSorley has a lot of heart and it’s hard to argue that. It was evident when he came in the game in the second half of the Gator Bowl, or the incredibly bad title, the Tax Slayer Bowl.

McSorley did his very best to lead the Nittany Lions from behind against the favored Georgia Bulldogs.

This season, McSorley has started very game and is backed up by Tommy Stevens.

The Nittany Lions are sitting at 5-2. They were also 5-2 last year at this time, but the difference is they have already played the meat of their schedule this year. McSorley has run for 249 yards and most of those yards have been timely and been for first downs. He’s never going to remind anyone of Lamar Jackson, or Deshaun Watson, but McSorley was just what James Franklin and Penn State needed at this time.

In his third season at Penn State, Franklin’s Nittany Lions are poised for a breakthrough.
