Memphis was laughed at by SEC homer Brent Musburger, and then the Memphis TigersĀ proceeded to whip high and mighty Ole Miss. I’m not sure that Ole Miss took them seriously.
The game was no fluke as the Memphis Tigers moved to 6-0 on the season. Since then, the Memphis Tigers moved to 7-0 with a 66-42 win over Tulsa. If the 42 points given up by the Memphis defense
against Tulsa, keep in mind that the Golden Hurricanes scored 38 points on Oklahoma in a 38-52 loss to the Sooners.
Looks like Memphis might be the real deal and Quarterback Paxton Lynch is starting to get mentions from the media.
Memphis head coach Justin Fuente is also gaining recognition as an up and coming star in the coaching ranks. The Memphis Tigers were pretty bad when he arrived.
Memphis has Tulane on their schedule this weekend, but then they face Houston and Temple in consecutive weekends.
The Houston Cougars are also 7-0 on the season, with their biggest win being over ACC member Louisville. They have a brand new coach that apparently knows how to win because he was the Offensive Coordinator for Urban Meyer last season at Ohio State. Tom Herman has his Houston Cougars playing well in his first season as a head coach.
The Cougars play SEC member Vanderbilt this weekend. Then, they face Cincinnati and a huge showdown with the Memphis Tigers on November 14th.

Temple improved to 7-0 on Thursday Night October 22nd with a big win over East Carolina. Temple beat Penn State for the first time in 41 tries in their opening game, and they beat them up pretty good. The Temple Owls are looking really good, just like Memphis and Houston.
The problem for Temple is that they play Notre Dame this weekend. After the Irish, the only really tough opponent remaining on Temple’s schedule is Memphis.
The other tough team in this Conference is Navy. Before you laugh, consider that Navy is 5-1 with their only lose coming at Notre Dame. The Naval Academy plays an option offense that is difficult to stop after a week’s preparation. Navy has been known to give a lot of good teams trouble over the years.
Obviously, all of these schools can’t finish the year unbeaten. The best they could do is have just one undefeated team, but they could have another school with just one loss and they could get maybe two good bowl games.
No matter how the season finishes up, I don’t think anyone at the start of the season would have predicted Memphis, Houston and Temple would all have zero in their loss column at this time of year.
If you haven’t seen any of these teams play, you owe it to yourself to turn on one of their games this weekend or beyond. They are well coached and fun to watch.
This is why the new playoffs are better than nothing but not good enough. None of these guys have a shot at proving they are the best of they finish unbeaten
I totally agree. I think what they should do is have 8 spots with each power 5 conference winner getting a spot and 3 open spots for a Memphis or Houston, or even another school from a big conference.
