Florida Quarterback Situation

It was announced recently that 2015 Florida Gator starting Quarterback Treon Harris was moving to Wide Receiver. With last year’s early year starter Will Grier already gone, there must be something up the sleeves of Florida coach Jim McElwain.

In this recent signing class, the Gators brought in 6-6, 220 4 star prospect Feleipe’ Franks. They also signed 6-6, 210 Kyle Trask from Manvel, Texas.

McElwain must like tall Quarterbacks.

Franks was one of the top Quarterback prospects in this year’s class and he had been committed to LSU before the Gators talked him into to staying closer to home.

Franks is a good looking prospect able to see downfield with his height and make his throws, plus he is pretty mobile even though he is listed as having 4.75 speed in the 40.

Trask was only rated a 3 star, and he is supposed to run a 5.1 40 but he is a little more mobile than that. Plus, he has a really nice arm and can fling it downfield with considerably more ease than Franks. Trask ran the zone read in high school and you can’t run that with 5.1 speed very well. He’s also much bigger than 210 pounds.

The other prospects for the starting job are a couple of transfers.

Luke Del Rio spent some of his early days in Jacksonville because his father was the head coach of the Jaguars. Jack Del Rio was fired and he joined the Denver Broncos staff from there and Luke was Christian McCaffrey’s Quarterback at Valor Christian High School.

The younger Del Rio must love traveling because he walked on at Alabama after high school even though he had offers from several schools. Bama brought on a coach he didn’t care for, and Del Rio moved on to Oregon State.

When Beavers coach Mike Riley left Oregon State for Nebraska and they hired Gary Andersen, Del

Rio was moving on again.

This time, he wound up at Florida. The problem with moving on is that you have to sit out a year. Del Rio sat out last season and now he is eligible for the Gators. Del Rio threw 18 passes during his time in Corvallis, Oregon. He’s hardly an experienced Quarterback, but he’s not without talent. If Riley had stayed at Oregon State, Del Rio probably would have started this past season, but we will never know now.

Also on hand is graduate transfer Austin Appleby from Purdue. Appleby is a big guy at 6-5, 240 and he saw plenty of action at Purdue. He got his degree and probably saw the writing on the wall with the Boilermakers. Appleby threw for over 2,700 yards while at Purdue, but the Boilermakers just couldn’t turn the corner and probably Purdue coach Darrell Hazel was wanting to go in a different direction with David Blough.

Florida coach Jim McElwain must feel comfortable enough with these 4 guys to move Treon Harris to another position.

The one thing I do know about McElwain, he’s no Will Muschamp. His offenses are Quarterback friendly. Will Grier was improving before he got suspended.

I am thinking that Appleby beats out Del Rio for the job, but I could change my mind after the Spring Game.

Long term, I believe Trask beats out Franks and is the Gator Quarterback of the future.
