The Bowl Eligible Game

The Southeastern Conference Games when they play each other and not against their typical powder puff non conference games are extremely interesting.

This weekend, Mississippi State is not playing Tennessee Martin, but heading down the road to

Tuscaloosa, Alabama to take on the pride of the SEC, Alabama.

Auburn is at Georgia and Missouri is at Texas A%M.  The LSU Tigers are heading up to Arkansas to try and win the Golden Boot. South Carolina visits Florida for maybe Steve Spurrier’s last time.

This will also be one of the better Kentucky at Tennessee games in a long time.

In the Spring, it was clearly obvious that the Kentucky Wildcats were going to be a much better team this season.

They started off at 5-1, but they hit their conference schedule and lost 4 straight and they now stand at 5-5.

A college football team needs to win 6 games to qualify for a bowl game and that is hugely important for a program like Kentucky. They always say the extra bowl practices are helpful because of the extra practice time for the team and especially the younger players and it gives coaches more time to develop some upcoming talent.

Kentucky has finished the last 2 seasons at 2-10. They also have recruited the best 2 football classes in the history of their school the past 2 seasons. Qualifying for a bowl game justifies the Mark Stoops program at Kentucky to current players and to future recruits.

Kentucky already has 16 commitments for next year’s class and a bowl berth would prove to them that the Wildcat program is indeed heading in the right direction.

But, they have to beat Tennessee this weekend or to beat in-state rival Louisville in 2 weeks.

Kentucky was a powerhouse back in the Bear Bryant days, but he left for Texas A%M and then returned to his old school, Alabama where he became a legend.

They haven’t had a lot of great teams since he left other than a few odd years. If Mark Stoops can make them into an SEC East Power, he will become something of a legend as well.

Tennessee has been a long time power in football, but has fallen on hard times.

I just wrote about the Tennessee Volunteers in my post https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=7644987123689389016#editor/target=post;postID=4241354766131453825;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=17;src=postname

The Tennessee Vols are 4-5 and have Kentucky this weekend, and then Missouri and they end the season with their own in-state rival, Vanderbilt. They need to beat two out of the three last teams they face to earn a bowl berth.

Like Kentucky, they need the practice and development time. There may not be another team in the country other than maybe USC that is as young as Tennessee. They signed a class of 35 players last signing period which was ranked 5th in the country. This was a very impressive class and 22 of them have played his season.

The Vols have 26 commitments already for next year’s class. Experts have the next class rated as the 6th best in the country and they have a lot of players committed in positions of true needs.

The Tennessee Vols and head coach Butch Jones are a team on the move and even if they do not make a bowl this season, they certainly will the following season as some of these kids start to gain experience.

This is a very important game for both schools for the current season and for the near future, but both of these schools are in great shape for the future.

I look forward to this game almost as much as the Mississippi State and Alabama game.  Almost as much, but it’s not quite the same on the national scene obviously as the Bama-Mississippi State game.

Kentucky has been fun to watch all season. So has Tennessee, but they just got a lot more fun when Joshua Dobbs took over Quarterbacking duties.

Fun weekend in the SEC, but don’t expect me to beat my chest and do any chanting.
