#3 Auburn vs Kansas State

Expectations were high in Manhattan, Kansas for the Auburn Tigers. Kansas State was just an after thought and another obstacle in the way of another mighty SEC team. The atmosphere in Manhattan at Bill Snyder Family Stadium was electric.

Every player in Kansas State purple paled in comparison to every player in Auburn white. Auburn has so many more athletes than Kansas State. They are bigger, they are faster, they are meaner and they are tougher.

But, the Kansas State Wildcats gave them all they wanted. Bill Snyder is without a doubt one of the top coaches in America. What he does in the state of Kansas is beyond amazing and he rarely gets the credit he so much deserves. Place Bill Snyder in the state of Florida or anywhere else in the South and he dominates the rest of the country. The man is an outstanding coach. Check out the history of Kansas State before the arrival of Snyder and you will understand why the Wildcats play in Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

I will admit to being a bit disappointed by this game a little because I wanted to see a show put on by Nick Marshall and his pals. It’s been a mediocre season so far for Florida State and Jameis Winston and for the Crimson Tide of Alabama. I was ready to move Auburn to number one in my own poll with a great performance in Manhattan, Kansas.

It just didn’t happen.

Yes, Auburn won this game and they are rated in the top 5. Kansas State is barely ranked. If Kansas State made a few field goals then they are in this game. OU and Bob Stoops blows out this KSU team later on, probably

Kansas State is a little bit better competition than the other cream puffs the SEC teams have been playing.

Kansas State missedĀ  3 Field Goals and had a Touchdown pass in the first half come out of the receiver’s hands and become an interception. Kansas State fumbled on their own 21 giving Auburn 3 free points. 16 points were given away by Kansas State.

Auburn was lucky to get out of Kansas alive and still undefeated.

Nick Marshall did make a few bad throws but for the most part he was dead on and AuburnĀ  receivers even super man Duke Williams dropped a lot of passes.

The Auburn offense never could quite get it going last night. However, their defense was mostly pretty good allowing only 40 yards rushing to Kansas State and keeping Kansas State’s excellent running Quarterback, Jake Waters mostly pinned in the backfield.

The Auburn defense also held All American Wide Receiver Tyler Lockett to only 6 catches for 45 yards. Of course, the dropped Touchdown pass by Lockett that turned into an interception was entirely his own fault. During his career as a Wildcat,

Where Lockett hurt Auburn was in punt returns where he had 3 nearly go the distance and each put Kansas State in great field position. Over his entire career at Kansas State, Lockett has 4 career Kickoff returns for Touchdowns. He is extremely dangerous with the ball in his hands so congratulations to the Auburn defense for mostly holding him in check.

Kansas state Quarterback Jake Waters had 245 yards passing from 24 completions out of 40 attempts. Waters was the Wildcats’ leading rusher coming in but was held to a negative 7 yards rushing on the night.

Kansas State with their home field advantage, had 3 Turnovers and 3 missed Field Goals. They dominated the first half, mostly, and were down 10-7. They fumbled on their own 21 giving Auburn a free shot at points, but the Wildcat defense held and Auburn only got a Field Goal out of it. The Auburn kicker, Daniel Carlson, had no problem making Field Goals and was 2 out of 2.

Nick Marshall and the Auburn run game was mostly held in check as well with Kansas State only allowing 128 yards rushing to one of the better running offenses in the nation.

Cameron Artis-Payne only had 63 yards rushing on 22 carries. Marshall had 46 yards on 10 carries.

Marshall threw for 231 yards on 17 completions out of 31 attempts. He had 3 passes deflected by Kansas State Defensive Linemen and a lot of drops.

Kansas State Defensive Tackle Travis Britz did his best JJ Watt impersonation knocking down 2 passes. While All-American candidate Ryan Mueller also had a knock down.

Auburn Wide Receiver Duke Williams had 8 receptions on the night for 110 yards and 1 Touchdown. He had several drops as well. Sammie Coates only had 2 catches for 24 yards but was overthrown a couple of times as well.

The state of Kansas can be a hard place to play. There are often winds swirling around which is tough on visiting Quarterbacks and Receivers that aren’t used to it.

Still, Kansas State out played Auburn. Kansas State coaching staff out coached Auburn’s and I am a huge fan of Gus Malzahn and his offense.

This game won’t help Auburn’s ranking, but at this point in the season it’s more about survival. The War Eagles passed their first real test on the season which is all that matters in the end.
