Duck Dynasty and College Football

I have never seen even a single minute of the reality TV show, Duck Dynasty. Nor, do I ever intend to watch it.

But, what some people don’t know is that the show’s  patriarch, Phil Robertson, once played college football at Louisiana Tech University.

Robertson was the starting QB for Louisiana Tech in 1966 and 1967, but did not return for his senior year in 1968.

Hall of Fame QB, Terry Bradshaw took over Robertson’s spot in 1968 and was also the starter in 1969 and then the #1 overall pick in the 1970 NFL draft.

Keep in mind that this was a different time and era and QB’s did not put up the incredible passing yards that they do now. They didn’t run the sophisticated passing offenses of today or the hurry up offenses. Most teams exclusively ran the ball. Heisman Trophy winner Gary Beban of UCLA threw for 1,400 yards in 1967 which is pretty petty compared to today’s Heisman winners or contenders.

Robertson put up decent passing numbers for those days with 2,237 yards from 179 completions in 411 attempts. He did throw for 12 TDs.

Louisiana Tech fans got an early glimpse of his future duck hunting days as he threw enough wounded ducks to total 34 career interceptions.

Still, the word was he had a strong arm much like his replacement, Bradshaw. Terry Bradshaw was the top pick in the entire draft and it all worked out well for him and the Steelers but he was rough around the edges and a huge project.

Supposedly, the Washington Redskins wanted to give Robertson a shot at the NFL. But, Robertson was more interested in hunting than playing football and it all worked out for him just as the NFL worked out for Terry Bradshaw.

Phil Robertson said that “Terry went for the bucks, and I chased after the ducks”.

I’m still not going to watch Duck Dynasty but before recently I did not know that Phil Robertson was a former college football player and I do respect him for speaking his mind.
