Zach Gentry Michigan Tight End

The University of Texas had a problem and it was a long standing problem. They just couldn’t seem to bring in a good Quarterback. They put all of their hopes in Garrett Gilbert and that didn’t quite work out. David Ash, Case McCoy, Tyrone Swoopes and Jerrod Heard all were mostly failures at Texas. Texas coach Charlie Strong’s staff gained a commitment from 4 star Quarterback Zach Gentry from Albuquerque, New Mexico and the excitement was off the charts. However, some did question his size saying that tall Quarterbacks didn’t tend to succeed.

6-7, 235 Zach Gentry was listed as the 9th best Pro Style Quarterback by ESPN. But, watching his highlight videos, or game film, his passing was erratic at best. What was dazzling about his game was his running ability. 6-7, 235 guys should not be able to run like that. His potential had Texas fans

drooling.

After being hired by his old school, Michigan, Jim Harbaugh hit the ground running. He hired staff and immediately got on the recruiting trail. The Wolverines old coach, Brady Hoke, had a commitment from Quarterback Alex Malzone. But, Quarterback had been a recent issue at Michigan as well. Jim Harbaugh didn’t sit on his hands, and he wanted to sign another Quarterback besides Malzone in his first class.

Harbaugh turned his attention to Albuquerque’s Zach Gentry.

The state of New Mexico doesn’t produce a lot of talent in general. Top programs generally don’t spend a lot of time recruiting it’s borders. I can think of Brian Urlacher, Jim Everett, Matt Hegarty, Landry Jones and few others.

But, Zach Gentry was an incredible athlete and at that size if he didn’t work out at Quarterback he might could play elsewhere.

Current Michigan starting Quarterback is Wilton Speight and he’s 6-6, 245. Last year’s Paxton Lynch from Memphis, was a 1st round draft pick by the Denver Broncos and he’s 6-7, 245.

There was always a chance with Zach Gentry, and he is so athletic.

The Jim Harbaugh and Michigan lure was too much to pass up on for Gentry and he switched his commitment from the Longhorns to the Wolverines.

Zach Gentry did not play at all as a freshman, taking a redshirt. Gentry was asked to move to Tight End and apparently he’s much more of a team player than most Quarterbacks. He made the switch and he played a small amount in 2016, but mostly special teams.

The Wolverines may have moved him to Tight End, but it wasn’t because they lacked numbers, or talent there.

Jake Butt was a senior in 2016 and possibly the top Tight End in the country that season.

Going into the 2017 season, Butt is gone to the NFL. However, the Wolverines are still deep at Tight End. Senior Ian Bunting and junior Tyrone Wheatley Jr are battling it out for the starting spot at Tight End. Both will play and play a lot and both are huge. Gentry will be working to gain playing time with sophomores Sean McKeon and Nick Eubanks.

Anyone that watched the Michigan Spring Game had to be impressed with the excellent speed of Zach Gentry. Quarterback Brandon Peters hit a wide open Zach Gentry who made the Safety miss and then turned on the jets to out run the Michigan secondary into the End Zone.

Zach Gentry looked like the guy we all imagined he would be as a high school football player. After some time as a college guy, in the weight room, and eating well, Gentry is now up to 245 pounds and he runs like a deer.

Gentry may not play all that much this season. But, soon, he’s going to have a break out season. The guy is big, strong, has good hands and can run.

I’m just saying, by the 2018 college football season, Zach Gentry may be the best Tight End in college football.
