It’s Time for Lorenzo Carter to Step up for Georgia

In the recruiting class of 2014 Outside Linebacker/Defensive End Lorenzo Carter was one of the players I had the most confidence would do well.

Going into his senior season, Lorenzo Carter has been good at times. But, he hasn’t developed into the All American most figured he would be for the Georgia Bulldogs.

People call recruiting a crap shoot, so when the recruiting services get it right it’s going to need to be pointed out as well.

On ESPN’s 2014 recruiting ranking, they had Myles Garrett as the top ranked Defensive End. As

you well know, Garrett was just the first player picked in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Alabama recruit Da’Shawn Hand from Woodbridge, Virginia, was rated as the 2nd best Defensive End and a 5 star recruit by all of the services. Hand has been a reserve mostly at Alabama, but a talented reserve and 2017 will be a breakout season for him, I predict. Hand has supposedly done 42 reps in the 225 bench press test that the NFL uses, and he did it while still in high school. He is super strong and super talented and a grim reminder for those that hate Alabama that the Crimson Tide is not going anywhere resembling down while Nick Saban is around.

Ranked 3rd, and also a 5 star, was our guy Lorenzo Carter from Norcross, Georgia. He was listed at 6-5, 234 by ESPN and supposedly now he is 6-6, 242. He hasn’t grown much and he still has that speed off the edge.

Solomon Thomas from Coppell, Texas was rated 4th and after starting 3 straight seasons at Stanford, Thomas was picked with the 3rd overall pick in the 2017 Draft.

With their top 4 getting picked with the first three selections in the NFL Draft, you would have to say that the recruiting gurus knocked it out of the park in 2014.

The 2nd pick in the latest draft, Mitchell Trubisky, was the 7th ranked Dual Threat Quarterback in the 2013 recruiting class.

But, the problem with the rankings in some people’s eyes is that Da’Shawn Hand and Lorenzo Carter were 5 star recruits. The 5 stars are supposed to be difference makers on the team, but Hand and Carter really haven’t been. However, both have a year left to play college football since neither left

for the NFL.

Lorenzo Carter has not been a bust. Last season, he did finish with 44 total tackles with 6 of those tackles for loss. He had 5 Quarterback sacks and 4 more Quarterback hurries. Carter forced 2 fumbles and he picked up a fumble and ran it back for a Touchdown.

Carter also had a really good true freshman season with 41 total tackles with 4 and a half Quarterback sacks. But, apparently, Carter got in the coaches’ dog house, because he didn’t play that much as a sophomore in 2015. His sophomore season was not much to brag about for a former 5 star recruit.

2016 was his best year in college, but it wasn’t really the best he could, or should, do. Carter, Trenton Thompson and David Bellamy tied for the team lead with 5 Quarterback sacks. Often, in the NFL Draft, the top picks are going to be big guys like Lorenzo Carter that play Defensive End, or Outside Linebacker that can get a lot of heat on the Quarterbacks.

Lorenzo Carter will be picked up by an NFL team because of his size, speed and his potential. But, an outstanding senior season will get Carter potentially in the early rounds of the draft. 6-6, 245 guys that probably run in the 4.6 range do not grow on trees and they will be extremely popular with NFL scouts.

It’s time for Lorenzo Carter to step up and prove he was worthy of that 5 star ranking. There’s a lot of money riding on it.
