The Arizona Wildcats visited San Antonio, Texas to play the local UTSA Roadrunners. The University of Texas at San Antonio is coached by Larry Coker the former Miami Hurricane coach that led the Canes to the 2001 National Championship.
UTSA is a start up program and has only been in existence 4 years, but apparently they are doing things right down in San Antonio. After starting off with a 4-6 in 2011, the Roadrunners went 8-4 in 2012. Last season they went 7-5, but one of the 5 losses was a 38-13 loss to the Arizona Wildcats.
This is the second start up team I have watched in a week’s time and I thoroughly enjoyed both of them. Georgia State kicked a Field Goal as time ran out to beat a scrappy Abilene Christian team last Wednesday 38-37. That game was fun to watch and so was this game last night between the Arizona Wildcats and the UTSA Roadrunners.
I do realize that the NFL (No Fun League) has started and the vast majority of the USA prefers the Pros so most football fans turned it onto the Seahawks beating up on the Packers.
Last week the Roadrunners roughed up the University of Houston 27-7, so they may be ready to give Arizona more of a battle this time around. Larry Coker supposedly built this UTSA team up around defense and they looked good in their opener against Houston.
Arizona was also 1-0 coming in with a convincing 58-13 beat down of UNLV last Friday night.
The Wildcats lost their QB from last season and their excellent RB, Ka’Deem Carey. But, they have one of the best group of WRs in the nation. Austin Hill, David Richards, Cayleb Jones and Trey Griffey are all big receivers that can run for the Wildcats. Samajie Grant, Nate Phillips, and Davonte Neal are all smaller receivers that can fly. They team up to form one of the best groups of Wide Receivers in the country. They also have a solid Offensive Line returning.
Arizona put up 787 yards in week one against UNLV and that was tops in the entire nation.
First play of the game for the Wildcats, 85 yard TD pass from freshman Anu Solomon to Texas transfer Cayleb Jones. Looked like another blow out win for the Wildcats, but that was not to be.
UTSA returned everybody on offense other than at QB and Tucker Carter took over there. They are a well coached team on both sides of the ball and if the Wildcats were expecting to blow them out they were caught off guard.
Entertaining first half of football to say the least with Arizona taking a 20-16 lead into the locker room.

True freshman from Fresno, California Nick Wilson has taken over as their star Running Back. The PAC 12s is loaded with talented freshmen this year.
UTSA defense as surprisingly stout after the early screw ups. They held the nation’s #1 offense mostly in check the rest of the night and the Wildcats only had 454 which is an incredible amount below their 787 yards of the week before.
But, in the end it was the Arizona Wildcats defense that stepped up big and picked off a Tucker Carter pass preserving a tight 26-23 win for the Pac 12 team.
Freshman QB Anu Solomon finished with 231 yards on 17 completions out of 32 attempts. Not a great performance after last week’s heroics.
True freshman RB Nick Wilson had 174 yards on 30 carries and a TD. Super Wide Receiver Austin Hill was pretty much shut down with only 2 catches for 9 yards.
Cayleb Hill led his team in receiving with 4 catches for 143 yards and a TD.
Biggest play of the night for Arizona was the interception by former walk-on Jared Tevis to preserve the victory for the Wildcats.
Either of these teams will be fun to watch this season. San Antonio has needed a football team for ages and they have a well coached one to watch in UTSA.
