2014 All Freshmen Team

College Football Crazy’s all freshman team consisting of both true freshmen and redshirt freshmen.

QB: JT Barrett – Ohio State: (6-1, 225) Wichita Falls, Texas. Barrett’s story is well known, already. Redshirt freshman had to take over the starting position for the Buckeyes and did really well after a brief early season struggle. Great arm and feet.

QB: Anu Solomon – Arizona: (6-2, 205) Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a huge season for Solomon. The guy won state every year in Nevada at Bishop Gorman High School and is having similar success at the college level in leading his team to the Pac 12 South Championship while throwing for around 3,500 yards.

QB: Brad Kaaya – Miami: (6-4, 220) West Hills, California. Kaaya is a true freshman out of California that had to play right away for the Hurricanes. Showed some ability but also showed the inexperience. Threw for nearly 3,000 yards and looks like a future star.

RB: Samaje Perine – Oklahoma: (5-11, 245) Pflugerville, Texas. Perine is a power back with a little bit of speed. Again, I would like to point out that I predicted this guy would be good months before the season started. He now holds the record for most yards rushing in a single game with 427 yards. On the season, he rushed for 1,579 yards and 21 Touchdowns.

RB: Nick Chubb – Georgia: (5-10, 230) Cedartown, Georgia. Chubb is another power back and he has excellent breakaway speed for his size. He rushed for 1,281 yards as a true freshman and he stepped up when his team needed him with the loss of Todd Gurley.

RB: Nick Wilson – Arizona: (5-10, 200) Fresno, California. Wilson was recruited as a sprinter for track as well as a Running Back. He exploded unto the scene from day one and finished with 1,289 yards rushing in spite of missing some game time due to injury.

RB: Royce Freeman – Oregon: (6-0, 230) Imperial, California. Highly ranked recruit coming in did not disappoint the Ducks while rushing for 1,299 yards. Competition between Freeman and Wilson as the top new backs in the West.

WR: Artavis Scott – Clemson: (5-11, 190) Oldsmar, Florida. Clemson had their offensive struggles this season but Scot had a remarkable season catching 68 passes for 851 yards and 7 Touchdowns. A healthy Deshaun Watson will have a nice group of receivers to throw to led by Scott.

WR: Mike Dudek – Illinois: (5-11, 180) Naperville, Illinois. A lightly recruited Wide Receiver that had a very impressive freshman season with 69 catches for 965 yards. He doesn’t have the measurable features that the scouts love, but he has the hands and the heart.

WR: DaeSean Hamilton – Penn State: (6-1, 205) Fredericksburg, Virginia. Penn State’s offense this season was atrocious but Hamilton was a sparkling star for them.  Hamilton caught 75 passes for 848 yards.

WR: KD Cannon – Baylor: (6-0, 170) Mt Pleasant, Texas. Cannon was an instant star for the Bears catching 50 passes for 833 yards and 6 Touchdowns. Slight of build, but speed makes up for that.

TE: Bucky Hodges – Virginia Tech: (6-6, 245) Virginia Beach, Virginia. Hodges is a former Quarterback and he is huge for a freshman. Hodges hauled in 42 receptions for 517 yards and 7 Touchdowns. He’s got the potential to be a top Tight End in college and beyond.

TE: Ethan Wulf – Tennessee: (6-5, 240) Minster, Ohio. Wulf was just one of many true freshmen this year for the Vols. He caught 21 passes for 203 yards. Not the greatest of stats, but he split time with 3 other Tight Ends including another true freshman who has since left the team for more playing time.

OT: Cam Robinson – Alabama: (6-6, 325) Monroe, Louisiana. Robinson started the very first play in the Alabama Spring Game and promptly got beaten to the outside by Bama’s Zxavier Dickson. Robinson adjusted and put an end to that immediately. This guy might be the best true freshman Left Tackle to ever step on the field.

OT: Mason Cole – Michigan: (6-5, 295) Tarpon Springs, Florida. Like Robinson, Cole started from the moment he stepped on campus. He’s not quite the talent that Robinson is, but he will be a very special Offensive Tackle before he is done at Ann Arbor.

OT: Toa Lobendahn – USC: (6-3, 280) Cerritos, California. Started at left Guard for a good part of the season but the Trojans had another freshman, Khaleil Rodgers, return to the lineup at Guard and Lobendahn moved to Left Tackle. The Trojans often had 4 freshmen in the starting lineup in the Offensive Line and 3 of them were true freshmen.

OG: Damien Mama – USC: (6-5, 370) Bellflower, California. Mama is just a huge beast of a man. He started from day one and then was replaced for a while, but found himself back in the starting lineup. Look for these young guys at USC to mature and improve.

OG: Ramsey Meyers – Kentucky: (6-3, 300) Orange Park, Florida. Meyers is part of a Kentucky Wildcat team that improved greatly this season. They only finished 5-7, but after 2 straight seasons at 2-10 that’s doing pretty well. Meyers is a tough guy that played well in 2014 and will continue to develop.

C: Viane Talamaivao – USC: (6-3, 330) Moreno Valley, California. Talamaivao didn’t start, but he played a lot at Center and demonstrated a lot of ability. USC had the youngest Offensive Line in the nation and they were pretty good and will get better.

DE: Myles Garrett – Texas A%M: (6-5, 255) Arlington, Texas. It’s no secret that the Aggies have struggled defensively in the SEC. Garrett is as good as they come. He impressed as a true freshman with 11 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss.

DE: Derek Barnett – Tennessee: (6-3, 265) Nashville, Tennessee. Of all of the impressive Defensive Ends in the SEC this season, I am not sure any of them were more impressive than Barnett. He totaled 69 tackles with 10 sacks and an astounding 20.5 tackles for losses. Very aggressive off the edge.

DE: Marquis Haynes – Ole Miss: (6-3, 220) Jacksonville, Florida. Haynes played amongst a bunch of great players on the Ole Miss Defensive Line. He totaled 29 tackles with 8.5 tackles for losses and 7.5 Quarterback sacks. He was a very active member of the Land Shark defense.

DT: Davon Godchaux – LSU: (6-4, 300) Plaquemine, Louisiana. Godchaux made a huge difference up front for the LSU Tigers this season. This Tiger team was young and will be dangerous in the future. Their other starting Defensive Tackle was a sophomore.

DT: Matt Elam – Kentucky: (6-5, 350) Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Immovable object in the middle. Elam was a fantastic true freshman for the Wildcats at Tackle/Nose Guard.  I did not intentionally place all SEC players in the all freshmen Defensive Line.

LB: DJ Calhoun – Arizona State: (6-0, 215) El Cerrito, California. Calhoun had 35 total tackles with 6.5 for losses and 2 sacks and forced a fumble. Calhoun has excellent quickness and should make a difference for the Sun Devils for the next few years.

LB: Kenny Young – UCLA: (6-1, 230) New Orleans, Louisiana. The Pac 12 has invaded the South and guys like Kenny Young will be stars out there over the next few years. Young had 34 tackles as a true freshman and saw considerable playing time. He was high school teammates with Malachi Dupre the top rated Wide Receiver in the country.

LB: Nigel Bowden – Vanderbilt: (6-1, 245) Macon, Georgia. Tough, tough season for Vanderbilt losing spectacular coach James Franklin to Penn State. But, Linebacker Bowden and his freshman sidekick Zach Cunningham, were a bright spot for the Commodores. Bowden led his team in tackles with 78 total and should led their defense for the next couple of years at least.

LB: Darron Lee – Ohio State:(6-2, 230) New Albany, Ohio. Lee had a fantastic freshman season finishing 3rd on the team in tackles. He had 2 interceptions, and 2 fumble returns with both of those going for Touchdowns. Lee also had 13.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 Quarterback sacks.

LB: Raekwon McMillan – Ohio State: (6-2, 240) Hinesville, Georgia. In my opinion, McMillan was the top defensive recruit in the country last season. He did not produce as many stats as Darron Lee, but he is definitely a star in the making. Finished with 49 tackles and had an Interception that he returned for a Touchdown.

CB: Adoree Jackson – USC: (5-11, 185) Belleville, Illinois. This kid is sensational. He’s just got another gear that most guys don’t have. Jackson played a little both ways for a while and he returned kickoffs and punts as well. Caught 7 passes with 2 going for Touchdowns and ran the ball once. He had 20 Kickoff returns with one a Touchdown and he returned a couple of punts. He excels mostly as a Cornerback.

CB: Jalen Tabor – Florida: (6-1, 195) Washington DC. Florida’s problem was never defense while Will Muschamp was there. Tabor is one of those super talented players that the Gators always seem to get and is tall enough to be a top Cornerback. Tabor was very active with 28 tackles and an interception plus 7 passes broken up. He also had 4 tackles for loss and 2 sacks.

CB: Sidney Jones – Washington: (6-0, 175) Diamond Bar, California. The Washington Huskies  had a new coach this season and he brought in some new talent in the secondary with Jones and Budda Baker. Jones had 55 total tackles, 2 Interceptions and 4 passes broken up.

CB: Jarvis McCall Jr – Arizona: (6-2, 180) Tampa, Florida. Arizona had an amazing season winning the Pac 12 South. McCall is a tall Cornerback like everybody wants these days to battle the taller Wide Receivers. McCall had 49 tackles and broke up 7 passes.

CB: Eli Apple – Ohio State: (6-1, 200) Voorhees, New Jersey. It didn’t take long before Eli Apple was on the field for the Buckeyes. He had 41 total tackles with 5.5 for losses. Apple also had 2 Interceptions and 7 passes broken up. He forced a fumble and returned another for a Touchdown. Apple and friends will have to play their best game ever to beat Alabama.

DB: Quin Blanding – Virginia: (6-4, 215) Virginia Beach, Virginia. Blanding was rated the top Defensive Back recruit in the country and they were definitely correct. Blanding led his team in tackles this season with 123 total with 2.5 for loss and 1 Quarterback sack. Blanding also had 3 Interceptions and 6 passes broken up.

DB: Todd Kelly Jr – Tennessee: (6-0, 205) Knoxville, Tennessee. The Vols had a top 5 recruiting class last season and a lot of them played right away. Kelly is a home town guy that did well starting from the beginning. Kelly had 3 Interceptions and was a ball hawk in the Vol secondary. Watch out for the Vols next season and beyond.

DB: Budda Baker – Washington: (5-10, 175) Bellevue, Washington. Baker stood out in the opening game. He was third on the team in tackles with 76 with 2 of those being for a loss. He also broke up 5 passes and forced a fumble.

DB: Jaleel Wadood – UCLA: (5-10, 175) Los Angeles, California. Wadood made his way onto the field pretty quickly as a true freshman. Registered 51 total tackles this year, along with a tackle for a loss and a Quarterback sack.

DB: Jamal Adams – LSU: (6-0, 205) Carrolton, Texas. Adams finished 6th on his team in total

tackles and he had 3 tackles for loss and a Quarterback sack. He also broke up another 5 passes and was a very aggressive defender for the Tigers.
