During halftime of the New Mexico Bowl, the nation’s top player Kayvon Thibodeaux from Westlake Village, California announced his college decision.
I figured Alabama, or at the very least to the SEC, would be his college destination. But, I was shocked when he pulled out the Oregon hat and placed it on his head.
Second year head coach Mario Cristobal, it seems, is putting together a really nice recruiting class during this, his first full recruiting season. Oregon has not put much emphasis on defense in recent years, and it’s surprising to look at Cristobal’s commitments, so far.
Most services have Thibodeaux as the top player in the country. If not the very best, at least in the top 5 and he’s definitely considered the top defensive end in the nation.
Cristobal is definitely trying to build a champion and it appears as if he is trying to bring defense to the Ducks and that’s been missing for a very long time.
The 6-5, 235 Thibodeaux is an incredible prospect and the obvious headliner to the 2019 Oregon
recruiting class as he would have been with any school’s class.
The Ducks also have a commitment from the top cornerback prospect in the country in Mykael Wright from Valencia, California. Pretty nice start to the class adding the top two players at two different positions.
Oregon also has commitments from two of the best outside linebackers in the country in Mase Funa from the great Mater Dei High School in Santa Anna, California, plus speedy Ge’Mon Eaford from Deerfield Beach, Florida.
It’s not until the 5th player in their recruiting class that they have a commitment from an offensive player. But, that player is a good wide receiver in Lance Wilhoite from Nashville, Tennessee. He’s the 13th rated wide receiver on ESPN’s recruiting list. He’s a tallish receiver with a ton of upside and taken from the heart of SEC country.
So far, Oregon has 20 commitments. Thibodeaux is a 5 star recruit which is hard to come by, but then they have 14 four star recruits and 5 three stars. It’s an outstanding class and shows what kind of a recruiter that Mario Cristobal and his staff are, plus their dedication to building a defense.
When asked why he picked Oregon over Alabama and others, Â Thibodeaux basically said that he wanted to be THE GUY. I can see that. At Alabama, he would have been just one of many top players in the defensive line. At Oregon, he has a chance to be the guy to turn that program back into a top one, but this time it will be one with a defense.
The Ducks also landed a good safety prospect out of Alabama in Trikweze Bridges. He’s listed as 6-3, 180 so he’s a tall rangy 4 star defensive back with tons of potential.
Other 4 star defensive prospects include Keyon Ware-Hudson who is a tough defensive tackle out of Mater Dei, and has the 6-2, 310 body to play early. Defensive end Trevon Ma’ae is from another storied high school program in Las Vegas Bishop Gorman. These guys could help the Oregon defense out pretty early.

He should be able to help out early with his 6-3, 285 frame.
Arvada, Colorado’s Isaac Townsend is not highly rated and only a 3 star, but he’s 6-6, 235 and dripping with potential at defensive end. Recruiting is often a crap shoot and Townsend could end up being every bit as good as Thibodeaux when all is said and done.
They emphasized defensive talent in this class, but they still have commitments from some really Malaesala Armavae-Laulu from Henderson, Nevada. The young man is huge at 6-6, 345.
good offensive players besides Nashville’s Wilhoite. They landed the top Junior College offensive guard prospect in
The only other offensive line commit is from a really good one in Harbor City, California’s Jonah Tauanu’u. He’s rated as the 13th best offensive tackle, but is already massive as a high school senior at 6-6, 320.
There than Wilhoite, they have commitments from three other 4 star wide receivers in Mycah Pittman, Joshua Delgado and Jaron Waters. Delgado is from IMG Academy in Florida with Pittman and Waters being Californians.
They also picked up 4 star tight end Patrick Herbert who is a local kid from Eugene.
They picked up running back help with the 9th ranked running back in the country with Sean Dollars who is the third commitment from Mater Dei High School in this class. Hey, you want to sign players that a winners and Mater Dei definitely knows how to win.
Another running back in this class is 3 star Jayvaun Wilson from Valencia, California. Don’t overlook him because of his 3 star status, he’s a 6-1, 210 back that the coaches like. Some of the best players in the NFL were never ranked coming out of high school.
I don’t even know what to say about 3 star quarterback commit Cale Millen from Snoqualmie, Â Washington. ESPN has him ranked as their 19th ranked pro style quarterback and I just don’t agree with that at all. Watching his Hudl videos is really all I have to go off of, but this kid can flat out play, at least at the high school level. He’s about 6-4, 200 and for his size, he is really muscular with the frame to beef up. Not only can he fling it, but he’s also pretty mobile and he keeps his eyes downfield as he’s scrambling and buying time.
I like the kid and I am thinking the Ducks may have gotten a steal with Millen. If somebody is reading this and thinks I am nuts, google the name Cale Millen and watch for yourself. If you have access to any of his full games, I do believe you will agree with my assessment of the kid. He can play. College ball is a major step up, but he has a ton of potential.
Their only other commitment is a kicker by the name of Camden Lewis and of course he is the lowest rated commit in their class because kickers are rarely rated highly. But, Lewis is from Cornelius, North Carolina and agreed to move all the way across the country to kick for the Ducks.
This is not the best class in the country, but ESPN has it ranked 6th right now with just a couple days remaining before the early signing period.
Mario Cristobal and his staff can recruit so watch out for the Ducks in the next few years. They are coming. This is one impressive recruiting class and the Ducks mean to play some defense.
