Michigan Quarterbacks 2018

With the almost shocking news of former Ole Miss Quarterback Shea Patterson transferring to Michigan, the feeling is now that the Wolverines could be national title contenders in the very near future.

Patterson was the top rated dual threat quarterback in the recruiting class of 2016 and he has more than lived up to his press clippings.

Filling in for injured Chad Kelly as a true freshman, the talented Patterson threw 132 passes, completing 72 of them for 880 yards and 6 touchdowns. He also ran for 169 yards.

Coming into the 2017 season, Patterson was the clear frontrunner to start. The season got strange for the Rebels of Ole Miss when head football coach Hugh Freeze got in some serious trouble and

resigned from his position.

But, the show must go on and Ole Miss named Cole Luke interim head coach.

In seven games, Patterson threw for 2,259 yards and 17 touchdowns. He is a tremendous athlete, but his running was held in check and he finished with negative yardage on the ground. He was lost for the season in the 7th game and was replaced by Jordan Ta’Amu.

Because of the probation, some of the Ole Miss players elected to transfer out of the program, including Patterson.

Since there are Michigan fans in Patterson’s family, Michigan became the most logical place for a transfer.

The last time I checked, it had not been determined whether Patterson will be eligible for the 2018 season. The thought is, he will be because of the situation at Ole Miss.

That will make the Michigan quarterbacking situation very interesting going into next season.

Brandon Peters was thought of as the next quarterback at Michigan and he had taken over the job as of late this season. However, he was injured and had to sit out the Ohio State game. Peters will be ready to play in the Michigan bowl game.

The fans, and I, love Brandon Peters. I saw him play in high school and he was extremely impressive and he was one of the top quarterback recruits in his class. He came into Michigan as a freshman from Avon, Indiana and redshirted. At 6-5, 220. Peters is the prototype pro style quarterback which is what Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is looking for since he runs a pro style offense. Peters has a

When Peters took over as quarterback late this season, it energized the offense, the defense, the fans and the entire stadium. He led the team down for score after score to put their opponents away.

But, now, Peters will have a fight on his hands with Patterson coming in. Patterson is a different type of quarterback, yet they are more alike than some would think. Patterson is just shorter and a little more agile with his feet than Peters. If he completely recovers from his knee injury that ended 2017, Patterson will be tough for Big 10 defenses to contain.

Then, there’s Dylan McCaffrey.

As the third son in the McCaffrey family, Dylan is very quick on his feet. He also has a good arm and was one of the more highly rated quarterbacks in the country in his recruiting class. He redshirted this past season and we are yet to see him against college competition.

As we saw with Peters this past season, Jim Harbaugh is very reluctant to put a redshirt freshman in the game. It’s highly unlikely that McCaffrey will see much playing time in 2018, but the thinking is that he has more than enough talent to fight for playing time. McCaffrey Family

Another possible challenge could come from true freshman Joe Milton from Orlando, Florida. Rated as the 6th best dual threat quarterback in the land, Milton can fling it. His mechanics are a little strange at time and he is all arm when he throws it, but what an arm this kid does possess. He is 6-5, 225 and good at throwing on the run and most of the time he is out of position when he throws it 50 or 60 yards downfield to hit an open receiver. At the high school level, the strong armed Milton is

unbelievable.

I have my doubts that Harbaugh will allow a true freshman to guide his offense, but you never know with a talent like Joe Milton. He still has to sign on the dotted line, but he has given no indication that he fears competition in the least.

Another possible challenger to the job is recent commitment Kevin Doyle from St John’s College High School in Washington DC. Doyle is a 4 star recruit and he stands 6-4, 210 and obviously Jim Harbaugh sees something in him. He was the player of the year in Washington DC, although it’s hard to say who the competition was for that honor. Doyle is tall and he can really run. He is thin and will need to fill out a bit to become stout enough to hold up under a pass rush, but most everything else is there. He’s athletic enough to be used to block kicks by his high school coaches. They set him out on the edge and used his quickness and long arms to block kicks. That was pretty impressive to watch. He has the athletic ability to run the zone read in high school, but like every other quarterback coming into college football, he will have much to learn.

There’s no final word on Shea Patterson’s eligibility as far as I know. But, with Patterson, Peters, McCaffrey and maybe Milton and Doyle, this quarterback race could get really interesting. Patterson, they are saying, will be the best quarterback that Harbaugh has had at Michigan. While this is true, don’t take Peters lightly at all.

We still don’t know on McCaffrey or any of the others.

But, this could get really exciting even for Buckeye fans that want a strong Michigan team.
