The Rap Song: Florida State 1988

It was a good time to be a Seminole. In 1987, the Florida State Seminoles finished the season with an 11-1 record and ranked 2nd in the country. Their only loss was to Miami when the Noles missed on a two point conversion attempt when Bobby Bowden elected to go for the win instead of the tie.

Miami went on to win the national championship in 1987.

But, this was a new season and now Florida State was ranked number one going into the 1988 season and they were loaded. The best player on the team was Pro Football Hall of Fame member Deion Sanders, but that was sort of the tip of the iceberg.

Just look at the quarterback position first of all. Chip Ferguson, Peter Tom Willis, Casey Weldon and Brad Johnson were all quarterbacks on that team. Highly unusual to have that many good quarterbacks on one team, but only one of them can play at a time.

Sammie Smith at running back and Marion Butts at fullback were the starters in the backfield, but Dexter Carter and Edgar Bennett were also available. Butts was a 250 battering ram, but Smith was about 220 and could fly.

Ronald Lewis, Terry Anthony and Lawrence Dawsey were the teams receivers, while Reggie Johnson was the tight end.

Pat Tomberlin, Michael Tanks and John Ionata were members of the offensive line that paved the way for a potent offense.

Across the ball, the team was also loaded. Other than Neon Deion, they had Leroy Butler, Stan Shivers, Eric Williams and Dedrick Dodge in the secondary.

At linebacker, the Noles featured John Hadley, Felton Hayes and Kelvin Smith.

Then, on the defensive line, Odell Haggins, Steve Gabbord and Eric Hayes were difficult to deal with.

No doubt about it, this team was deep and it was talented. They were also very cocky. They just knew they were going to win the national championship and steam roll over everyone in their path. Not only that, but the media hyped them up constantly. All these guys heard was how great they were and they were the early season number one team in the land.

Bobby Bowden was on vacation. He was away from the program and relaxing somewhere and nobody wanted to bother the man. He needed his time away from the team and we all need our time off.

The players got together and thought it would be a great idea if they made a rap song.

So make it they did. It was eerily similar to the Super Bowl Shuffle made by the Chicago Bears before their Super Bowl game in which they demolished the New England Patriots in the 1985 season. The Bears were possibly the most dominant NFL team of all time and they all knew it.

It appeared as if the entire Florida State team was involved with the players all gathered together and doing the chorus, if you can really call it that.

Then, they broke up into position groups and continued.

The funniest parts were the individuals. Some of them were pretty decent, like Deion Sanders, of course. Then, there was running back Sammie Smith and Dedrick Dodge who were fairly good. Defensive tackle Odell Haggins is a country boy and he loves country music. He is definitely not a very good rap artist.

The quarterbacks were pretty bad, too, and I will be kind about the other guys trying to rap.

The chorus goes something like this:
Corpus cavernosa has various spongy tissues which can enlarge cialis sample once filled with blood. Hey! We are the Seminoles of Florida State
We know we're good, some say we're great
Our goal is simple - best in the land
Rocking to the beat of the Marchin Chiefs band
On Saturday night, we'll strut our stuff
And show the nation the 'Noles are tough
We've worked real hard to get where we're at
So we're havin fun doing the Seminole Rap
The last chorus is slightly different with the last two lines:
With a national crown this season we'll cap That's we're doing the Seminole Rap!
I don't know if going viral was a thing back in 1988, but this song gets out there and everyone hears it.
Eventually, Bobby Bowden gets back and he must have cringed when he heard the song. The Seminole team is basically saying they have the national championship all sewed up even before the season gets going.
There wasn't much Bobby Bowden could do about it then. The song was out there and everyone had heard it, at least everyone that would play Florida State in the 1988 season.
But, what did it matter, really?
As already mentioned, the Seminoles were talented, they were deep and they were good. It was pretty much just like the song said. There was a reason the Seminoles were ranked number one going into the season. They were that good.
On September 3rd, the Seminoles travelled to Miami, Florida to take on the Hurricanes.
The Miami Hurricanes had listened to the Seminole Rap so much they were sick of it. They came out on the field and they demolished the mighty Florida State Seminoles, 31-0.
It was a slaughter. The end of the Seminoles, their season was over.
Nah, they recovered and won the rest of their games. They beat rival Florida, 52-17 and 7th ranked Auburn in the Sugar Bowl, 13-7.
They finished 3rd in the country in the final polls behind Notre Dame and Miami
The moral of the story? I don't know if there is one. The Bears rapped before the Super Bowl and got away with it. The Seminoles Rap didn't work quite so well. An extremely talented Miami Hurricanes team heard the song and put a stop to it.
But, just for grins, you've got to listen to the Seminole Rap.
