Alize Mack Notre Dame Tight End

There are several schools that at least somebody thinks is Tight End University. Some might say Miami is Tight End U, and some others might say Stanford. In the SEC right now, Georgia has the best roster of Tight Ends.

But, over the long haul, Tight End U might be the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Tight End U

Tyler Eifert was their last big time Tight End back in 2012 and he is now a Cincinnati Bengal. But, Troy Niklas followed Eifert and he was a 2nd round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2014. Then, Ben Koyack followed and was picked by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Following Koyack was supposedly their next big thing at Tight End in Texan Durham Smythe. But, Smythe went down in the 3rd game of the season and was lost for the year. It was a very unlucky season for the Irish.

Durham Smythe with his Tobacco Road sounding name may not ever live up to his promise,

However, they did see the arrival of a youngster that might be yet another in a long line of great Tight Ends.

Alize Jones was the number one ranked Tight End in his class of 2015 from famous Las Vegas Bishop Gorman High School. At 6-5, 220, Jones’ game was built on speed at a position of need for the Fighting Irish. With the loss of Durham Smythe, Jones was pressed into active duty right away and he responded with 13 receptions.

While 2015 may have been a very unfortunate season for the Irish as far as injuries, they still finished the season with a 10-3 win/loss record and were in competition for a playoff spot as late as their last regular season game against Stanford. They lost by 2 points in the driving rain at Clemson and then by 2 points again in a miracle finish at Stanford.

2016 was an entirely different story as the Irish crumbled to a pitiful 4-8 record.

Jones, now up to 240 pounds, was lost for the season early on because of grades and never had a hand in such a disastrous season. Nobody from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas really knows how to lose.

It’s not known yet whether Alize Jones will regain his eligibility, but what is known is that he will never be Alize Jones again.

He is now known as Alize Mack.

Mack was truly dominating in high school. As a senior, he caught 41 passes for 930 yards and 13 Touchdowns. He averaged almost 23 yards per reception as a senior and that coming off of a 35

reception season as a junior.

If Mack regains his eligibility, look for a big season. It may even be an outstanding season with awards and he would be able to leave for the NFL after that whether he’s ready, or not.

In the case of him not being available for the Irish, there’s still Durham Smythe with one more chance at stardom. Seniors Nic Weishar and Tyler Latua also return, but they add the nation’s top Tight End recruit Brock Wright from Cypress, Texas and the 3rd rated guy from Arlington Heights, Illinois in Cole Kmet.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish should always be loaded at the Tight End position and they mostly have been as long as I have been following the game.

Alize Mack should be that next big star at Tight End, but it’s all up to him.
