Michigan State Running Backs 2016

Back in the 2013 football season, I started following Michigan State a lot more closely because of their defense. They were a fun team to watch for a fan of defense. Head coach Mark Dantonio and Defensive Coordinator Pat Narduzzi put together the nation’s top defense that year.

While watching the Spartans’ defense rough up several teams, Running Back Jeremy Langford came to my attention. Langford ran for just under 3,000 yards for his last two seasons in college and he was drafted by the Chicago Bears after running the fastest 40 at the combine for a Running Back.

Set to replace Langford was Delton Williams. But, Williams got into some trouble and was

suspended.

With Williams gone, the door was opened in the Spring of 2015 for sophomore Gerald Holmes and redshirt freshman Madre London. Neither of them took control of the job in the Spring and true freshman LJ Scott arrived in the Summer.

By season’s end, true freshman LJ Scott was getting most of the snaps and he finished up as the Spartans leading rusher with 699 yards and 11 Touchdowns. His best game came against Purdue when he ran for 146 yards. The 6-0, 235 power back from Hubbard, Ohio was a member of my preseason  freshman All American team. freshman

Against Iowa in the Big 10 Championship game, Scott got 22 carries and at 235 pounds he is big enough and strong enough to carry the ball 25 to 30 times per game.

The Spartan’s second leading rusher was Gerald Holmes with 540 yards and 8 Touchdowns. Like Scott, Holmes is a big back who has packed on the muscle and is up to 225 pounds on his 6 foot frame.

The sophomore from Flint, Michigan actually played a little in 2014, but he was not overly successful running for 44 yards and averaging less than 3 yards per carry.

the job going into last season. Although he played high school football at one the nation’s top football schools, he was only rated a 3 star by ESPN and as the 76th best at his position.

But, the 6-1, 220 London has some speed. He came in with the 2014 recruiting  class which should make Spartan fans feel better about his ranking. The 2014 class may have been the best ever and especially at Running Back with the likes of Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook, Joseph Yearby, Nick Chubb, Jalen Hurd, Elijah Hood, Royce Freeman, Samaje Perine, Nick Wilson and Marlon Mack. All of those guys have been big stars and Christian McCaffrey wasn’t even listed as a Running Back.

London ended up with an even 500 yards for the season on 119 carries.

Delton Williams was suspended for the first 5 games, but he had little impact upon his return. He only ran for 56 yards at a very poor 2.15 yards per carry, but he was used in short yardage situations primarily.

Since the Spartans lost senior Fullback Trevon Pendleton, Williams has been moved to Fullback. Williams should play 2016 at around 230 to 240 pounds and will bring to the the table things that the previous Fullback could not.

Another possible option for the Spartans for the 2016 season will be senior Wide Receiver RJ

Shelton. Michigan State put him at Running Back at times last season and he responded with 127 rushing yards at over 5 yards per carry.

We are not sure what to expect out of Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio this season at Running Back. The best guess may be they will continue to play their big 3 again in Scott, Holmes and London
