1968 Heisman Trophy Finalists

Obviously OJ Simpson was the runaway winner with the trophy but I am not blogging about this guy, which is really too bad because he was one of the greatest of his day.

2. Leroy Keyes – Purdue RB

Keyes was a great 3 year player for the Boilermakers that played both ways. During his senior

season, Keyes ran for 1,003 yards and 14 Touchdowns. He also caught 33 passes out of the backfield and even completed 4 passes for 3 Touchdowns. Sadly, no defensive stats are available from back in those years.

3. Terry Hanratty – Notre Dame QB

Hanratty was a Notre Dame legend playing for the 1966 national champions as a sophomore. After the 1968 season, Hanratty was picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2nd round and started there briefly before losing his job to Hall of Fame Quarterback Terry Bradshaw.

4. Ted Kwalick – Penn State Tight End

Kwalick was one of the great Tight Ends of his time and a 2 time All American for the Nittany Lions.  Kwalick was a 1st round pick by the San Fransisco 49ers in the 1969 NFL Draft and he played there for 5 years before bolting for the new WFL for a season and then bouncing back to the Oakland Raiders.

5. Ted Hendricks – Miami DE

The Mad Stork was so good that he has awards named after him. After making All American in 1967 and 1968, Hendricks was surprisingly only a 2nd round pick by the Baltimore Colts. Hendricks played 15 years in the NFL and made All Pro a multitude of times. Definitely one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

6. Ron Johnson – Michigan RB

Johnson ran for 1,391 yards in 1968 and had a Michigan school record 2,491 yards. Johnson went on to become the first guy in New York Giants history to rush for over 1,000 yards and did so twice.

That was after the Giants picked him the 1st round of the draft. Johnson played 7 years in the NFL for the Giants.

7. Bobby Douglass – Kansas QB

Homegrown boy played for the Jayhawks and led them to a share of the Big 8 Title and an Orange Bowl bid with a 9-2 record in  1968. He was an All American in 1968 and picked in the 2nd round by the Chicago Bears. Douglass was more of a running Quarterback and held NFL Quarterback rushing records for years. After he finally gave up football, he pitched briefly in the White Sox minor league system.

8. Chris Gilbert – Texas RB

The first player in college football history to rush for over 1,000 for 3 straight seasons. Gilbert was picked in the 5th round by the New York Jets, but never played a down in the NFL.

As you will notice, every player that got votes here was a senior.

9. Brian Dowling – Yale QB

Playing his high school ball at St Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Brian Dowling still holds  the career state of Ohio Interceptions record with 33. Dowling played Quarterback at Yale on what could have been the Bulldogs best team with Calvin Hill at Running Back. They finished the season at 8-0-1 with a tie with rival Harvard in one of the most famous college football games of all time.

Dowling played briefly for the Vikings, Patriots and bounced around for a while before going into the insurance business.

10. Ron Sellers – Florida State WR

Sellers caught 211 passes in his 3 seasons on the Florida State roster which was phenomenal at the time and a national record.

Sellers was picked in the 1st round by the Boston Patriots and was traded to the Dallas Cowboys after a couple of seasons. He played for the Cowboys for one season and led all receivers there, but was traded to the Miami Dolphins after that season. He played in Miami a year and was let go after 1 year there and was out of football.
