SEC East:

1. Georgia: The Bulldogs should be favored to win the East yet again. They have a good nucleus of Offensive Linemen returning especially John Theus, plus super back Nick Chubb and back up Sony Michel. The Bulldogs will need to find a Quarterback out of the group of Brice Ramsey, Faton Bauta and Jacob Park. The Georgia defense was hot and cold last season, but they have a proven winner in Defensive Coordinator Jeremy Pruitt.  They have a major influx of talent incoming with this recruiting class but how long before they can contribute is anyone’s guess. They signed Defensive Tackles Trenton Thompson,

   

   Jonathon Ledbetter, and Da’Quan Hawkins and Defensive Ends Natrez Patrick, Chauncey Rivers and D’Andre Walker. Throw in top Outside Linebacker Raquon Smith and Safeties Rashad Roundtree and Rico McGraw and you have one of the best defensive recruiting classes in the nation. Sophomore Defensive End Lorenzo Carter is one of the top up and coming players in the country. If one of the Quarterbacks can prove they can handle the job, then the Bulldogs could win the East. I personally like what I have seen of Jacob Park, but can he beat the others out is the question.

2. Missouri: Everybody keeps writing off the Tigers but they have won the SEC East 2 years in a row. Maty Mauk is back at Quarterback and he is a proven winner. Their offense lost a lot of skill position players including Marcus Murphy and Tyler Hansbrough at Running Back and most of their top Wide Receivers. The Offensive Line returns 4 out of 5 starters and should be good. Their defense lost their top pass rushers, but returns a solid nucleus everywhere else. Plus, they signed one of the very best defensive recruits in the entire nation in Terry Beckner Jr and he should play from day one. Their Linebackers and Defensive Backs return most everybody. Another interesting recruit brought in by Missouri is talented Quarterback Drew Lock and I can’t wait to see him on a college football field. He was so good as a shooting guard at 6-4, 205 that many top basketball programs were after him.
3. Tennessee: The Volunteers are one of the better up and coming teams in the country and their SEC rivals had better keep an eye on them. Their last 2 recruiting classes have been

   

   phenomenal to say the least. Joshua Dobbs is the Quarterback and he is a difference maker. The Vols with Dobbs in the lineup are a threat to anyone. Jalen Hurd returns at Running Back and should have a sidekick in Alvin Kamara who was a Junior College transfer after originally signing with Alabama. The Vols have a lot of talent returning at Wide Receiver led by Pig Howard and at Tight End led by Ethan Wolf. Their Offensive Line is still a little green, but is coming around. The defense will miss Linebacker A.J. Johnson, but the rest of that side of the ball was really young as well. Look out for true freshmen Defensive Tackles Jahlil McKenzie and Shy Tuttle. These are going to be 2 of the better Defensive Tackles in the country. The Vols are going to make a major push this year.

4. Kentucky: The Wildcats were 5-1 last year before the wheels came off and they finished 5-7. Quarterback Patrick Towles is one of the more promising Quarterbacks in the country. His surrounding cast was extremely young last season, but they have a year of experience under their belts and should be improved. The Offensive Line returns 4 out of 5 players. The Defense took some hits losing Bud Dupree and Za’Darius Smith, but they return most everybody else including top Safety AJ Stamps and top Linebacker Josh Forrest. Tennessee and Kentucky could be the surprise teams of the SEC next season, only fans that have been paying attention won’t be shocked.
5. Florida: The Gators might be kind of too low here, but hiring a new coach makes them sort of an unknown at present. They will still have Quarterback problems at least early with Treon Harris returning with maybe a push from redshirt freshman Will Grier. I loved Grier from

   

   high school and Spring practice last season. Former 5 star Quarterback Jeff Driskel was a total bust for the Gators and has transferred to Louisiana Tech. How much of the bust was on Driskel and how much on the previous coaching staff? Running Back Kelvin Taylor will take over the Running Back spot and dominate. I love what I have seen of Taylor. The Offensive Line is a mess with excellent Left Tackle DJ Humphries leaving early along with Offensive Guard Tyler Moore. The defense lost top pass rusher Dante Fowler Jr, but watch out for 5 star Defensive End CeCe Jefferson. They return top tackler Antonio Morrison, and top Defensive Backs Vernon Hargreaves, Marcus Maye and Jalen Tabor. The Gators should be fine on defense again.

6. South Carolina: The Gamecocks return outstanding Wide Receiver Pharoh Cooper, but who will throw him the ball? One year starting Quarterback Dylan Thompson is gone and the top choices could be Conner Mitch or Perry Orth. The Offensive Line lost their top 2 players and they lost Running Back Mike Davis. The defense was pretty awful last season at times and should at least be slightly better in 2015 with 8 returning starters.
7. Vanderbilt: The Commodores only won 3 games last year, but they have some promising talent with Running Back Ralph Webb who ran for 907 as a freshman and Quarterback Johnny McCrary came on late during his freshman season. The Offensive Line returns 4 out of 5 starters. The defense returns 12 out of their top 13 tacklers. They were really young, but the competition is really tough.

West:

1. Alabama: The Crimson Tide really needs no explanation. Jake Coker should take up where Blake Sims left off and super Running Back Derrick Henry is back and won’t have to share the position with TJ Yeldon. Amari Cooper will be tough to replace, but Alabama always reloads and Chris Black, ArDarius Stewart, Cam Sims and Robert Foster are all talented. The Tide lost 3 starters up front, but they don’t have a shortage of talent there, either. The defense lost their top player, Landon Collins, but the entire Defensive Line is back and there is plenty of potentially great players across the board. Alabama has won every recruiting race for the last several years and if they don’t win a national championship this season or the next, then something needs to change with their coaching staff. Personally, I am not impressed with either Coordinator.

   

2. Auburn: Losing Nick Marshall at Quarterback, Cameron Artis-Payne at Running Back and Sammy Coates at Wide Receiver will hurt the Tigers. But, back up Quarterback Jeremy Johnson looked really good last season and Wide Receiver Duke Williams returns. At Running Back, look for Roc Thomas to take up where Artis-Payne left off. Losing 4 year starter at Center, Reese Dismukes will hurt, but they do return 3 starters up front. The Defense will be improved with the addition of Will Muschamp and defense is what has been lacking at Auburn.  A Gus Malzahn team with a defense could be frightening.
3. Arkansas: Many readers will chuckle at my selection of Arkansas at the third spot and I might indeed be loopy. But, at the end of the year last season, the Razorbacks were about as good as anyone and I see them continuing to improve because they have a lot of people back. Denver Kirkland at Offensive Guard is as good as there is, and Dan Skipper at Left Tackle is huge and very good. At Right Tackle they lost Brey Cook, but his replacement, Brian Wallace could be their best Offensive Lineman by the time he is done. Their Offensive Line is just good. Back at Quarterback is Brandon Allen and Running Backs Alex Collins and Jonathon Williams are maybe the best tandem in the country. The Hog defense was brutal towards the end of last

   

   season and they did have some losses there. Biggest losses were Trey Flowers and Martrell Spaight. If solid replacements emerge for those losses, look out for Arkansas.

4. Mississippi State: Offensive and Defensive losses for Mississippi State may be too much to overcome, but senior Quarterback Dak Prescott decided to return and that’s a major plus. He does have 6-5, 225 Wide Receiver De’Runnya Wilson returning and he is a weapon. They lost a good number of Offensive Linemen and Josh Robinson at Running Back which is huge. The defense took huge hits and lost a bunch of it’s stars, but they do have depth.
5. LSU: If the Tigers had their Quarterback situation resolved, they would have been much higher on this list. Either Anthony Jennings or Brandon Harris is going to have to step up for the Tigers or it could be a long season. Running Back is covered with Leonard Fournette and Darrell Wilson, plus incoming freshmen Derrius Grice and  Nick Brossette. LSU always has big, strong, fast tailbacks and these guys are definitely in that category. They have some great Wide Receivers, and a solid nucleus up front returning. Defense should be as good as last year in spite of losing Defensive Coordinator Chavis to the Aggies.
6. Ole Miss: Bo Wallace is gone and many Ole Miss fans may say good. His replacement may be former Clemson Quarterback and the nephew of Hall of Fame Quarterback Jim Kelly, Chad Kelly. Laquan Treadwell returns at Wide Receiver and he is one of the best around. They should have another solid Offensive Line which is a good thing for whoever wins the

   

   Quarterback job. The Land Sharks were exposed last year against TCU, but they should have another really good defense.

7. Texas A%M: I don’t even know how the Aggies got the 7th spot on my list. I am thinking the other teams are just that good.  They should have a really good offense yet again with Sumlin as coach. Their defense may have received a shot in the arm with the hiring of Defensive Coordinator John Chavis from LSU. Kyle Allen returns at Quarterback and 5 star super man Kyler Murray arrives in the summer if he doesn’t sign a huge baseball contract. The scary thing for the Aggies is that if Murray does go baseball, Allen is the only Quarterback on the roster. I think the Aggies have a shot at finishing better than 7th in the SEC West, but who do I move them ahead of?
