Alabama Fans Will Miss Jake Coker. Or Will They?

After watching the Alabama Spring Game, I have a pretty big feeling that Alabama fans are going to miss Jake Coker in 2016.

I wrote about Coker last season: Coker

A lot of people, Alabama fans and others, were complaining about Coker and how terrible he was. I never got it.

Turns out, he had a huge part in leading them to a national championship.

Coker threw for 3,110 yards and 21 Touchdowns during Alabama’s championship run.

Jake Coker had to beat out Cooper Bateman last season and Bateman started one game which was the Tide’s only loss of the year.

Now, Cooper Bateman is the leader to replace Coker, and Alabama fans will not be pleased with what we saw in the Spring Game.

Blake Barnett is probably running second team right now. He was the highest rated Quarterback in the nation in the 2015 class and he redshirted last season.

Barnett supposedly has had problems with turnovers in practice and he showed that during the Spring Game as well.

That can’t happen in big games, obviously.

Possibly possessing the biggest arm of the bunch is David Cornwell from Norman, Oklahoma. A big guy at 6-5, 245 Cornwell is also a very good athlete. Presently, Cornwell seems to be out of good graces with the Alabama coaching staff.

The big surprise of the Spring was true freshman and early enrollee Jalen Hurts. The 4 star Dual Threat Quarterback from Channelview, Texas looked really good at least running the football.

It’s pretty doubtful that Nick Saban would be interested in playing a true freshman at Quarterback. Honestly, out of the 4 Quarterback prospects Jalen Hurts looked the best of all.

The curious thing about Alabama football is that the program has had the same issues in each of the past few Springs.

After A.J. McCarron used up his eligibility Jake Coker was supposed to be the savior of the program after he transferred in from Florida State. But, he had not graduated as of the Spring of 2014 and Blake Sims was the most experienced Quarterback available. The problem was, he looked awful in the Spring.

Coker did not play as well as Alabama had hoped and Sims beat him out and had an outstanding season in 2014.

Sims was a senior and then Coker was going to have to take over in 2015, or the Crimson Tide was going to have issues.

Coker and Cooper Bateman both looked bad in the Spring of 2015.

Coker came on and had a nice season while leading Alabama to the national championship.

Is Nick Saban playing mind games with all of us again? Or, are the Quarterbacks at Alabama really going to be bad in 2016?
