14 Top SEC Newcomers for 2014

 1.  Leonard Fournette- LSU RB. (6-0,215) New Orleans St Augustine. Fournette is pretty much the consensus number 1 player in the entire country this season. LSU’s top 2 backs left for the NFL so there’s an opportunity for him to play from day one. Look for outstanding high school RB Leonard

Fournette to take advantage of that opportunity. There has even already been Heisman talk involving Fournette. That’s probably not going to happen, but Fournette could be one of the better Running Backs to come around in a while. Fournette did not put up huge numbers in high school but at times stats can be a bit overrated. He did rush for over 5,000 yards and 63 TDs.

Figure on Fournette being the 3rd best SEC Running Back from day one.

2. Duke Williams- Auburn WR. (6-3,210) Laplace, Louisiana. Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. D’haquille ‘Duke’ Williams was the highest rated Junior College player in the country and upon seeing Duke Williams play it was clearly obvious why. This guy has it all. He’s big, fast, athletic and has great hands. He has the ability to make the circus catch in a crowd. Will team with the almost equally acrobatic and impressive, Sammie Coates to form one of the best Wide Receiver duos in the country.  Auburn QB, Nick Marshall has been working hard on his passing game and should be greatly improved but what’s more important is the addition of Duke Williams and the return of mostly everyone else on the offensive side of the ball.

3. Speedy Noil- Texas A&M WR (6-0, 175) New Orleans Louisiana Edna Karr HS. Speedy is not the biggest guy around but he is one of the absolute fastest guys in the country. There will be no way to keep this kind of speed off of the field in 2014. Played mostly Quarterback during his high school days. But, showed excellent receiving abilities at every camp and All Star game. His nickname pretty much says it all and SEC defenses will be following his contrail as early as 2014.

4.Jacob Coker-Alabama QB (6-5,230) Mobile, Alabama/Florida State. Jameis Winston beat out Coker for the Florida State job and Coker graduated and transferred immediately to Alabama. Bama QBs looked awful in the Spring and probably Coker starts immediately. Coker received limited reps with the Seminoles, but looked good when he had the opportunity. He’s a big, strong guy with a great arm and he runs well. Was a really good high school basketball player which confirms his athletic ability.

Rumor has had it that the Coker vs Winston battle for starting QB at Florida State was pretty close. He should start from day one at Alabama if he can make the transition

smoothly enough. What could make an interesting story in 2014 is a possible Alabama vs Florida State game for the National Championship. That match up would get a sickening amount of hype. Alabama fans are hopeful with Coker.

5. Malachi Dupre- LSU WR. (6-3,190) River Ridge, Louisiana, John Curtis High. JC high school runs an old school offense that is very conservative and they do not throw the ball very much. But, in spite of that, Dupre is one of the top Wide Receivers in the country. He caught 73 passes for 1479

yards and 22 TDs during his high school days and expect that numbers to increase dramatically at the next level. Should be one of the Tigers top WRs from day one along with fellow freshman from Lake Charles, La, Trey Quinn. Dupre is not a burner but he is plenty fast enough and has excellent size and hands. He also has excellent leaping ability and sports a 40 inch vertical. Like at Running Back, the Tigers lost their top 2 guys and just happen to have freshmen coming in that should replace them from day one.

6. Myles Garrett- Texas A&M DE. (6-5,245)  Arlington Martin. The top rated Defensive End in the country and should play immediately for the worst defense in the SEC. Had 33.5 sacks over his high school career with 20.5 of those coming in his senior season. Also had 172 total tackles during his high school career. Reportedly runs a 4.6 40. Garrett obviously comes in at a position of need for the Aggies. Expect Garrett to play as early as the first game for the Aggies even though he needs to fill out a bit. Can bring instant pressure on the QB for the Aggies which they badly need.

7. Lorenzo Carter-Georgia DE (6-6, 235) Norcross, Georgia. In my opinion, Carter has as much upside as any player in the country. 268 total tackles in only 2 years on the varsity and 24 sacks. Could make outstanding OLB or DE depending on where the Bulldogs and new Defensive

Coordinator Jeremy Pruitt needs him. Carter runs in the 4.5 to 4.6 range and makes plays all over the field. Look for Carter to see the field pretty early and possibly become a starter for the Bulldogs before the 2014 season is over.

8. LaVon Pearson-Tennessee WR (6-2,185) Newport News, Virginia Feather River College. Rated as the #2 Wide Receiver in the country, Pearson should play right away and play well for the Vols. The Tennessee Volunteers are a storied program that has fallen on tough times of late and they had an outstanding recruiting year in 2014 and any number of players could have made this list. Pearson should be in the mix from day one and be a difference maker at WR.

There was a time when the Vol Wide Receiver corps was as good as there was in football and feared across the nation by defenses. The Vols have really dropped off lately but could be about to be competitive again with the top dogs in the SEC.

9. Jalen Hurd-Tennessee RB (6-3,225) Hendersonville, Tennessee, Beech. See above. The Vols are hurting for talent right now and Hurd is definitely good. He is a big and tall guy but runs in the 4.4 range. If Hurd fizzles at Running Back, he could play Tight End, or Defensive End and maybe

Linebacker. The Vols just need help and have limited depth across the board. Hurd is rated as the 8th best Running Back in the country by ESPN and should play from day one. Has already enrolled at Knoxville and he went through the Spring with the Volunteers and showed well as a Running Back. Hurd rushed for 5,608 yards in High School and 71 TDs. No doubt that Leonard Fournette is a great Running Back, but Hurd is really good and the fascinating thing about Hurd is his potential to play other positions. He is an outstanding athlete.

10. Tony Brown-Alabama CB. (6-0, 195) Beaumont, Texas, Ozen High School. Considered the 2nd best Corner Back in the country behind the great Jabrill Peppers from New Jersey and who has signed with Michigan. Brown supposedly runs in the 4.35 range. If he is not a 4.35 guy, he is pretty close and should log playing time in his first season. Tony Brown was a high school champion in the 110 High Hurdles and is already running track at Alabama and ran the  60 meter indoor hurdles in 7.83. Keep in mind that Brown should have been attending the Senior Prom in high school. Instead, he ran track as a freshman in college and participated in the Alabama Spring Game and did well.

11. Cameron Robinson-Alabama OT. (6-5, 330) West Monroe, Louisiana. Robinson is the best Offensive Lineman in the country. Was starting at Left Tackle in the Bama Spring Game and he struggled early with the speed of his own defense coming off the edge but he seemed to adjust and do better as the game wore on. Robinson is a huge, huge kind and should be a top run blocker right away. Robinson will be responsible for Jacob Coker’s backside and will need to improve his lateral movement against the speedier outside pass rushers. Expect Robinson to be a 3 and done guy and declare for the NFL after his junior season at Bama.

12. Kyle Allen-Texas A&M QB. (6-3, 200) Scottsdale, Arizona  Desert Mountain High. Caleb Allen was the #1 ranked Pro Style QB in America this past recruiting season. Allen is coming into the ideal situation since the Aggies lost Johnny Manziel to the NFL and the back up last year has transferred to TCU. Either Allen or Caleb Hill will start for the Aggies next season and that’s all they have on campus right now. Plus, Hill has been in trouble with the law and may not even be around in 2014. So, it all may fall on the shoulders of Kyle Allen.

Allen threw for 8,201 yards in High School and 86 TDs.

13. Frank Iheanacho- Texas A&M WR (6-7, 220)  Houston Westside. SEC defenses had problems with Mike Evans and his 6-5 frame so wait until they get a load of Frank Iheanacho coming in at 6-7. Iheanacho was only ranked as the #11 WR in the nation but that means little and look for the Aggies to get this guy on the field pretty quickly to make up for the loss of Mike Evans.

He did not put up huge numbers in high school but had 42 catches as a senior for 622 yards and 15 TDs.

14. Rod Taylor-Ole Miss OG (6-3, 325) Jackson, Ms. Callaway High School.  Ole Miss coaching staff is not afraid to play true freshmen in the trenches up front. Rod Taylor is the Rebels’ top recruit and he could be as good or better as anyone they have on campus already so he could wind up playing and even starting. Taylor is a man child and capable  of handling the job.

Taylor was the #2 rated Offensive Guard in the entire country and an outstanding prospect for Ole Miss. Don’t be surprised if Taylor sees the field almost instant.
