Devine Redding or Camion Patrick Big 10 Running Backs

Kevin Wilson doesn’t get much appreciation at Indiana, but personally I enjoy watching his teams play. The Hoosiers were involved in some of the better games of the 2015 season.

The only teams that really beat Indiana soundly were Penn State and Michigan State, but the game against the Spartans was close until the very end.

They lost an exciting battle with top ranked Ohio State when back up Quarterback Zander Diamont could not complete a pass in the End Zone near the end of the game. They gave the Buckeyes quite a scare and Diamont showed a lot of heart. Zander

They lost a heartbreaker to Rutgers, and then took Iowa all the way to the final quarter before losing by 7 points.

Maybe their best effort in a losing contest came against Michigan. In a fantastic Double Overtime game, the Wolverines prevailed when Nate Sudfeld’s pass to Mitchell Paige was knocked down by Michigan Defensive Back Delano Hill to end the game.

This game was a thriller from beginning to end as the Hoosiers refused to roll over and die and

Jordan Howard shredded the Wolverine defense for an impressive 238 yards.

But, the Hoosiers weren’t done yet. They won their last two games and qualified for a bowl game and they met the Duke Blue Devils in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. Are there too many bowl games? Yes, but this one was one of the few decent games in bowls last season.

In usual Indiana Hoosier fashion, they went into Overtime against Duke with the Blue Devils coming away with the victory 44-41 in Overtime.

Sadly, the Hoosiers finished their season with a 6-7 record, but they were one of the more fun teams to watch last season.

Kevin Wilson is an offensive genius. Before getting the Indiana job, Wilson was the Offensive Line coach for Bob Stoops at Oklahoma. Wilson loves to run the football, but he also loves to throw it and his offenses are usually very adept at both if he has the right signal caller.

The state of Indiana puts out some good Quarterbacks from time to time, but they aren’t usually interested in staying home. Last year’s top Quarterback was Brandon Peters, who was maybe the best guy in the nation, but he signed with Jim Harbaugh and Michigan.

Next year’s top Quarterback is also one of the nation’s best and he committed to Tennessee before switching to Clemson.

Wilson has to beat the bushes to find a Quarterback and this past season he signed a Junior College player out of Texas named Richard Lagow. I wrote about Lagow here: Lagow

The Hoosiers have done well in finding quality Running Backs. During the 2014 season, the Hoosiers had Tevin Coleman at Running Back and he ran for 2,036 yards and then declared for the NFL Draft.

This past season, the Hoosiers landed the University of Alabama Birmingham Running Back transfer Jordan Howard. UAB had dropped it’s football program and Howard was eligible immediately.

Howard came in and ran for 1,213 yards which could have been more impressive if he had not missed 4 entire games and parts of others to injury. The junior Howard, then declared for the NFL, also.

Back up Running Back Devine Redding was a sophomore from Youngstown, Ohio and he filled in for Howard and he ran for 1,012 yards. His best outing came in the Pinstripe Bowl when he rushed for 227 yards.

Redding is back for his junior season and ready to run for over 2,000 yards.

But, as Lee Corso of ESPN loves to say, ‘not so fast’.

Judging from Indiana’s offense and particularly their Offensive Line, it would appear that Kevin Wilson has an eye for talent. It’s not so evident that he has an eye for defensive talent.

In the 2015 recruiting class, the Hoosiers signed 2 4 star recruits. Both of those 4 star recruits were Wide Receivers.

Camion Patrick was listed as a 6-2, 215 Junior College Wide Receiver from Knoxville, Tennessee by

way of East Mississippi Community College. He was injured last Fall and took a redshirt year. Coach Wilson saw something in Patrick and moved him to Running Back in the Spring. According to the Indiana football roster, Patrick is now up to 6-2, 225.

He was the 3rd rated Wide Receiver in the Junior College ranks that season by ESPN rankings, so you know he can fly.

Redding is about 5-10, 210 and could be spelled from time to time by Camion Patrick. Or, Patrick could start and be spelled by Redding.

Mike Majette is another Running Back that could figure into the mix. The sophomore from Virginia is about the same size as Redding and he ran for 181 yards as a freshman.

True freshman Kiante Enis is a nephew to famous Penn State Running Back Curtis Enis and he could have a say in the matter as well.

But, most likely, the starting Running Back in the 2016 season for Kevin Wilson and his Indiana Hoosiers will be Devine Redding or Camion Patrick.

No matter which guy wins the job, this team should be fun to watch yet again.
