I don’t remember a high school Quarterback signing with a big time school that never started in high school.
Often a Quarterback that is highly recruited enough to sign with a Florida type school will be a multi-year starter in high school..
But, not Kyle Trask of Manvel, Texas.
In the 2016 recruiting class, the Gators led by coach Jim McElwain offered a scholarship to Kyle
Trask and he gladly jumped on board.
Trask played on the Manvel varsity for 4 seasons throwing for 85 yards as a freshman. Max Preps has Trask listed as 6-5, 230. ESPN recruiting has him at 6-6, 211. Whichever is true, he was never much of a runner and even as a freshman in high school he had a negative 16 yards rushing.
In limited passing attempts as a sophomore, Trask completed 19 out of 24 passes for 190 yards and his first Touchdown.
Again, he went backwards on the ground losing 11 yards.

During his last 2 seasons of high school, Trask was still not the starter, but he threw the ball for 786 yards as a junior and 759 yards as a senior. He threw 17 Touchdown passes and he has not yet thrown his first Interception.
D’eriq King was the starting Quarterback at Manvel High School. In the 2015 season, King threw for 2,898 yards and 43 Touchdowns. He also ran for 640 yards which is why he was the starter. But, D’eriq King is 5-10, 170 and not exactly big time Quarterback material.
Trask, the back up, went to camps and was seen by college recruiters including the Florida Gators.
In the Spring Game, highly recruited 4 star Quarterback Feleipe’ Franks played terribly throwing Interceptions with nearly every pass until late in the game. While Franks looked horrible, lightly recruited Kyle Trask played very, very well. He even ran pretty well to pick up first downs. He showed a good head, making good decisions, and a good arm.
Feleipe’ Franks will improve, but if he is going to be the Florida Quarterback of the future, he may have to beat out unheralded Kyle Trask.
That may not be so easy to do.
