Adoree Jackson type athletes don’t just grow on trees. Neither does a JuJu Smith-Schuster. USC has some talent and any junior on this team is going to leave after this miserable season. Next year, head coach Clay Helton may be back, but a lot of his top talent will not.
In my opinion, then Athletic Director Pat Haden took the easy way out. USC needed a coach, and he hired interim coach Clay Helton even though Helton did not do all that well in his tryout. Sure, he won the Pac 12 South, but the Conference was considerably down last season. The Conference is down again this season unless you count Stanford and Washington.
Clay Helton has plenty of talent. He’s got talent that some coaches dream of coaching, but the team is reeling at 1-3. Yes, they did lose to number one ranked Alabama. But, a team with these kind of players that are mature and experienced should not lose by 52-6.
Helton has already changed Quarterbacks. After the season is over, he will probably blame a
Coordinator, or both and fire somebody.
But, it all starts at the top.
Speaking of starting at the top, USC boss Pat Haden stepped down after last season. Instead of searching the nation for a top Athletic Director to replace Haden, they just find another star Trojan player from it’s past. Lynn Swann was more than a star player, he’s a Pro Football Hall of Fame member who had he played for an offense that wanted to throw the ball more, he would have had terrific stats. People don’t mention him in the same breath as Jerry Rice, but Swann was a super star both in college and in the NFL. He made more circus type catches than anyone else I remember at the highest level. Even if a Defensive Back had great coverage on him, Swann had a way of making the defender look bad.
Swann was a super star on the football field. But, what experience does he have running a sports program that traditionally has been one of the greatest in the land? It’s not all football, as the Trojans were one of the top baseball programs in the nation for years. Track and Field was also historically great.
But, will Lynn Swann do the right thing when it comes to firing and hiring at the most visible football program in the nation.

I am not criticizing Swann at all. There is the possibility that he will do well with this job, but
running a school’s Athletic Department is not about being a former athlete. It’s even so much more than hiring and firing coaches.
USC is one of the top football programs in the country historically. They’ve produced many national championships and many NFL players and many Hall of Fame.
There’s really no reason for this program to be losing by a 6-52 score, or be 1-3 after 4 games.
Against Utah, the Trojans fumbled the ball 3 times in the first half. That’s totally not the coaches fault. But, there were also many coaching mistakes as well that more than likely did cost the team the game.
Normally, I preach patience with new coaches. But, that’s when a coach comes into a program with little to no talent. This USC team is loaded at most every position and the problem is in the coaching.
Most people figured USC would be good last year, but then it turned out that former coach Steve Sarkisian loved his alcohol. The season that once promised to be sweet turned sour pretty quickly. Finishing 8-6 is not acceptable for a program like USC, or any of the other schools like Alabama, Ohio State and Florida State.
I initially questioned the hiring of Clay Helton and sometimes I actually don’t care to be right.
