USC Spring Football Game 2014

New Head Coach Steve Sarkisian got the QB questions out of the way and named Cody Kessler the starter at QB. Back up is Max Brown and he looked pretty good. But, true freshman Jalen Greene was more impressive on this day. He is an early enrollee and was only a 3 star guy, but he has a super arm and is super quick. It should be an interesting battle in the future between Brown and Greene.

USC ran drills like Miami, Arizona State and several other schools have done lately. They also ran 7 on 7 drills.

There were quite a few recruits walking around and talking with players and coaches which was obviously Sarkisian’s clever plan. This coach really gets it. I saw a lot of people mocking the Trojans over this hire, but they are dead wrong. Check out the state of the Washington Husky program before he arrived and after he left.

Like many other teams in the spring, the Trojans threw the ball around quite a bit. They have a proven ground game with Buck Allen and Tre Allen.

It all starts up front and especially at USC. Chad Wheeler at Left Tackle with Toa Lobendahn beside him at Guard. Center was Max Tuerk with Khaliel Rodgers at Guard and giant Zach Banner at Right Tackle. This should be an Offensive Line that will help the Trojans win some games next season.

A lot of stars were held out of the game.

Justin Wilcox, a rising star in the coaching ranks, is the new Defensive Coordinator for the Trojans. The USC coaching staff feels like they have the best front 7 in the country. I believe there are several staffs thinking the same thing. However, whether they are the best front 7 in the nation or not, there’s no way to tell just yet but they should be a pretty good defense in 2014.

Leonard Williams at Tackle, Hayes Pullard at Linebacker and Josh Shaw at Corner are some of the best in the country.

Josh Shaw at CB was 3rd leading tackler a season ago and wants to match up against the best.

The defense held a lot of it’s better players out, but they have great depth and especially at the LB position. Charles Burks and Scott Stark look like a couple of outstanding up and coming OLB prospects. Stark, in particular, looks like the Brian Cushing or Clay Matthews kind of star at LB.

Biggest takeaway I had from the Spring Game was the talent of 3rd team QB and true freshman, Jalen Greene. Others have taken notice of his talent as well.
